2 Samuel 3:1 KJV Now there was
long war between the house of Saul and the house of David: but David
waxed stronger and stronger, and the house of Saul waxed weaker and
weaker.
Throughout the Bible we see transition from flesh to Spirit in many
examples.
· The older brother of two was always
representative of the flesh, while the younger was Spirit.
· Cain Abel.
· Ishmael Isaac.
· Esau Jacob.
· And even with KINGS – Saul and David.
David shows the KINGDOM aspect of Jesus Christ.
There is a time when the elder is the only one present, and then the
younger comes, favour is shown to the younger, the elder reacts, and
then the elder is removed to see the younger take over.
We have used the elder/younger aspect of the Wilderness Journey showing
the transition from a walk after the flesh to that of the Spirit in our
individual lives.
· You can actually see the same with OLD and
NEW covenants.
· But we are looking at it in our personal
growth.
We saw it in Noah using the raven before the dove in order to leave the
ark into the new world.
From Moses’ leadership to Joshua’s and entrance into Canaan.
There is a time when the old is alone and then comes the younger.
· A transition time occurs that is very
uncomfortable when the old and new are together.
· Then the younger rises more and more while
the older slowly fades away.
· And the younger always gets persecuted by
the older.
· Cain was jealous of Abel.
· Ishmael mocked Isaac.
· Esau hates Jacob.
· Soul persecutes David.
This is like our flesh reacting and not enjoying the transition.
The transition period in Israel occurred when Saul lost the anointing.
Samuel’s word to Saul:
1 Samuel 10:8 KJV And thou shalt go down before me to Gilgal;
and, behold, I will come down unto thee, to offer burnt offerings, and
to sacrifice sacrifices of peace offerings: seven days shalt thou
tarry, till I come to thee, and shew thee what thou shalt do.
Saul’s response:
1 Samuel 13:8-14 KJV And he tarried seven days, according to the
set time that Samuel had appointed: but Samuel came not to Gilgal; and
the people were scattered from him. (9) And Saul said,
Bring hither a burnt offering to me, and peace offerings. And he
offered the burnt offering. (10) And it came to pass, that
as soon as he had made an end of offering the burnt offering, behold,
Samuel came; and Saul went out to meet him, that he might salute
him. (11) And Samuel said, What hast thou done? And Saul
said, Because I saw that the people were scattered from me, and that
thou camest not within the days appointed, and that the Philistines
gathered themselves together at Michmash; (12) Therefore
said I, The Philistines will come down now upon me to Gilgal, and I
have not made supplication unto the LORD: I forced myself therefore,
and offered a burnt offering. (13) And Samuel said to Saul,
Thou hast done foolishly: thou hast not kept the commandment of the
LORD thy God, which he commanded thee: for now would the LORD have
established thy kingdom upon Israel for ever. (14) But now
thy kingdom shall not continue: the LORD hath sought him a man after
his own heart, and the LORD hath commanded him to be captain over his
people, because thou hast not kept that which the LORD commanded thee.
1 Samuel 15:3 KJV Now go and smite Amalek, and utterly destroy
all that they have, and spare them not; but slay both man and woman,
infant and suckling, ox and sheep, camel and ass.
Saul’s response:
1 Samuel 15:8-11 KJV And he took Agag the king of the Amalekites
alive, and utterly destroyed all the people with the edge of the
sword. (9) But Saul and the people spared Agag, and the
best of the sheep, and of the oxen, and of the fatlings, and the lambs,
and all that was good, and would not utterly destroy them: but every
thing that was vile and refuse, that they destroyed utterly.
(10) Then came the word of the LORD unto Samuel, saying,
(11) It repenteth me that I have set up Saul to be king: for he
is turned back from following me, and hath not performed my
commandments. And it grieved Samuel; and he cried unto the LORD all
night.
REBUKE TO SAUL:
1 Samuel 15:13-23 KJV And Samuel came to Saul: and Saul said unto
him, Blessed be thou of the LORD: I have performed the commandment of
the LORD. (14) And Samuel said, What meaneth then this
bleating of the sheep in mine ears, and the lowing of the oxen which I
hear? (15) And Saul said, They have brought them from the
Amalekites: for the people spared the best of the sheep and of the
oxen, to sacrifice unto the LORD thy God; and the rest we have utterly
destroyed. (16) Then Samuel said unto Saul, Stay, and I
will tell thee what the LORD hath said to me this night. And he said
unto him, Say on. (17) And Samuel said, When thou wast
little in thine own sight, wast thou not made the head of the tribes of
Israel, and the LORD anointed thee king over Israel? (18)
And the LORD sent thee on a journey, and said, Go and utterly destroy
the sinners the Amalekites, and fight against them until they be
consumed. (19) Wherefore then didst thou not obey the voice
of the LORD, but didst fly upon the spoil, and didst evil in the sight
of the LORD? (20) And Saul said unto Samuel, Yea, I have
obeyed the voice of the LORD, and have gone the way which the LORD sent
me, and have brought Agag the king of Amalek, and have utterly
destroyed the Amalekites. (21) But the people took of the
spoil, sheep and oxen, the chief of the things which should have been
utterly destroyed, to sacrifice unto the LORD thy God in Gilgal.
(22) And Samuel said, Hath the LORD as great delight in burnt
offerings and sacrifices, as in obeying the voice of the LORD? Behold,
to obey is better than sacrifice, and to hearken than the fat of
rams. (23) For rebellion is as the sin of witchcraft, and
stubbornness is as iniquity and idolatry. Because thou hast rejected
the word of the LORD, he hath also rejected thee from being king.
Saul could not repent.
David made worse sins of adultery and murder, whereas Saul sacrificed
when Samuel should have, and Saul spare the king and some animals when
they all should have been killed.
· But David knew how to repent.
· Saul blamed people but David accepted full
blame.
1 Samuel 16:13-14 KJV Then Samuel took the horn of oil, and
anointed him in the midst of his brethren: and the Spirit of the LORD
came upon David from that day forward. So Samuel rose up, and went to
Ramah. (14) But the Spirit of the LORD departed from Saul,
and an evil spirit from the LORD troubled him.
The Spirit of God left Saul and demon came upon him, while the Spirit
of God came upon David.
· Saul’s system is a fleshly one that
became demonized.
· It reminds me of the Old Covenant people of
Israel.
· Jesus Christ came with the NEW and the Old
was transitioning out.
· But the people of the Old became demonized
when the Old Covenant people never were demonized generally like that
before the first advent of Jesus Christ.
1 Samuel 9:2 KJV And he had a son, whose name was Saul, a choice
young man, and a goodly: and there was not among the children of Israel
a goodlier person than he: from his shoulders and upward he was higher
than any of the people.
Head speaks of WISDOM and shoulders speak of STRENGTH.
· The Old system is FLESHLY WISDOM AND FLESHLY
STRENGTH.
· God’s Spirit cannot work with that.
· Church circles abound with that strain of
fleshly might and strength.
· But it takes a truly HEART-TOUCHED person
like David to be used by the Spirit today.
Acts 13:22 KJV And when he had removed him, he raised up unto
them David to be their king; to whom also he gave testimony, and said,
I have found David the son of Jesse, a man after mine own heart, which
shall fulfil all my will.
When Samuel anointed David, God just finished telling Samuel to look at
the inward.
God told Samuel he rejected Saul.
1 Samuel 16:1 KJV And the LORD said unto Samuel, How long wilt
thou mourn for Saul, seeing I have rejected him from reigning over
Israel? fill thine horn with oil, and go, I will send thee to Jesse the
Bethlehemite: for I have provided me a king among his sons.
mâ'as – “REJECTED”
TO SPURN.
· A very strong word.
· Abhor, disappear.
· Contemn.
· Despise.
· Disdain.
· Loathe.
Jesse had seven sons who were just like Saul.
· Tall, strapping men.
1 Samuel 16:5-6 KJV And he said, Peaceably: I am come to
sacrifice unto the LORD: sanctify yourselves, and come with me to the
sacrifice. And he sanctified Jesse and his sons, and called them to the
sacrifice. (6) And it came to pass, when they were come,
that he looked on Eliab, and said, Surely the LORD'S anointed is before
him.
ELIAB – means GOD OF HIS FATHER.
· So religious sounding.
· Samuel was convinced.
1 Samuel 16:7 KJV But the LORD said unto Samuel, Look not on his
countenance, or on the height of his stature; because I have refused
him: for the LORD seeth not as man seeth; for man looketh on the
outward appearance, but the LORD looketh on the heart.
The word REFUSED in Hebrew is mâ'as
· SAME WORD translated as REJECTED in verse 1!
God despised that son when Samuel was convinced he was the one!
· Samuel said sure it was the Lord’s
anointed, and he meant KING!
· “Here’s the king!”
· Not so.
1 Samuel 16:8 KJV Then Jesse called Abinadab, and made him pass
before Samuel. And he said, Neither hath the LORD chosen this.
ABINADAB.
“Father of generosity.”
Prosperity gospel.
Not the one either.
1 Samuel 16:9 KJV Then Jesse made Shammah to pass by. And he
said, Neither hath the LORD chosen this.
Shammah.
ruin; by implication consternation.
LEGALISM!
What ruins the work of God.
1 Samuel 16:10 KJV Again, Jesse made seven of his sons to pass
before Samuel. And Samuel said unto Jesse, The LORD hath not chosen
these.
SEVEN BOYS!
Not one of them was the one.
SEVEN means COMPLETE.
GOD HAS TO SEE FLESHLINESS COMPLETELY BECOME
EXHAUSTED before He can provide the answer.
The best of flesh has to run out of options before
God can move.
DAVID WAS THE 8th!
8 represents RESURRECTION.
LIFE OF THE SPIRIT.
Look at the Wedding of Cana.
John 2:1-3 KJV And the third day there was a marriage in Cana of
Galilee; and the mother of Jesus was there: (2) And both
Jesus was called, and his disciples, to the marriage. (3)
And when they wanted wine, the mother of Jesus saith unto him, They
have no wine.
THEY RAN OUT OF THEIR WINE.
Man’s wine must run out before a miracle can
occur.
THREE days was when this miracle occurred!
NEW LIFE!
RESURRECTION LIFE!
8th DAY OF THE WEEK is the first day of the next
week!
John 2:10 KJV And saith unto him, Every man at the beginning doth
set forth good wine; and when men have well drunk, then that which is
worse: but thou hast kept the good wine until now.
Best wine came after the old wine was completely RUN OUT!
We cannot have a genuine move of the Kingdom Spirit power of Jesus
Christ until the OLD WINE IS GONE and there is a COMPLETE END OF
FLESHLY OPTIONS.
Even the prophet made a mistake.
Samuel.
We cannot seek what WE want God to do, but what God
wants to do.
This dumps everything seeker-friendly approach to
the work of God.
The flesh is going to kick and scream and want
it’s way, but the Spirit is not going to move until he flesh is
abandoned completely.
What sermons WE want to hear.
What church WE want to attend.
What direction WE want the church to go in.
We do not get a vote, folks, when we are truly
Kingdom oriented.
God’s kingdom is not a democracy but a
theocracy.
Like Myles Munroe noted, we do not vote in the
leader in a Kingdom.
God sets the five-fold ministry up in His way, His
time and His choosing.
We can even make the five-fold ministry into a fleshly thing where we
choose the five-fold ministers.
Look how Samuel anointed David contrasted with Saul.
1 Samuel 10:1 KJV Then Samuel took a vial of oil, and poured it
upon his head, and kissed him, and said, Is it not because the LORD
hath anointed thee to be captain over his inheritance?
1 Samuel 16:13 KJV Then Samuel took the horn of oil, and anointed
him in the midst of his brethren: and the Spirit of the LORD came upon
David from that day forward. So Samuel rose up, and went to Ramah.
VIAL as opposed to a HORN.
Jesus is called the HORN OF DAVID.
It is also MAN-MADE anointing instrument from
GOD-MADE ram’s horns.
While Jesse’s seven older sons were tall like Saul, and
rejected like Saul, look at David.
1 Samuel 16:12 KJV And he sent, and brought him in. Now he was
ruddy, and withal of a beautiful countenance, and goodly to look to.
And the LORD said, Arise, anoint him: for this is he.
RUDDY is “ADAM”—red earth.
Humanity.
Weakness.
Frail flesh.
HUMBLE.
BEAUTIFUL COUNTENANCE.
BRIGHT EYED.
FAIR EYES.
Ephesians 1:17-18 KJV That the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the
Father of glory, may give unto you the spirit of wisdom and revelation
in the knowledge of him: (18) The eyes of your
understanding being enlightened; that ye may know what is the hope of
his calling, and what the riches of the glory of his inheritance in the
saints,
Sees revelation.
His spirit is prominent in him.
“Arise, anoint him: for this is he.”
Same terms used with Jesus.
Matthew 3:16-17 KJV And Jesus, when he was baptized, went up
straightway out of the water: and, lo, the heavens were opened unto
him, and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove, and lighting
upon him: (17) And lo a voice from heaven, saying, This is
my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.
When Saul was disobedient and God ripped the KINGDOM from him, Samuel
said:
1 Samuel 15:28 KJV And Samuel said unto him, The LORD hath rent
the kingdom of Israel from thee this day, and hath given it to a
neighbour of thine, that is better than thou.
The book of Hebrews is a contrast between the OLD and the NEW and
constantly is emphasizing the word “BETTER”.
Everything about this screams out NEWNESS OF SPIRIT and OLDNESS OF
LETTER.
Most of religion today is the oldness of the letter.
Trying to maintain an Old Testament fleshly way of
life in a New Covenant.
Cannot work.
After David was anointed, Saul called him into his house to be armour
bearer.
An honorary position seeing he saw something good.
And David sang and his praise drove the evil spirit
away from Saul.
Saul like the PRAISE.
1 Samuel 16:21-23 KJV And David came to Saul, and stood before
him: and he loved him greatly; and he became his armourbearer.
(22) And Saul sent to Jesse, saying, Let David, I pray thee,
stand before me; for he hath found favour in my sight. (23)
And it came to pass, when the evil spirit from God was upon Saul, that
David took an harp, and played with his hand: so Saul was refreshed,
and was well, and the evil spirit departed from him.
Saul likes Praise.
But trouble came and Saul hated David when the
KINGDOM BATTLE OCCURRED.
BATTLE WITH GOLIATH COMES NEXT,
David took five smooth stones from the river and slew the giant, after
rejecting Saul’s armour.
FIVE-FOLD MINISTRY.
Kingdom works by five-fold ministry.
SAUL AND FLESH cannot stand FIVE FOLD MINISTRY
because they’re not voted on and not chosen by flesh, but
God’s GIFT manifests itself without the help of flesh.
God’s gift makes room for itself.
Proverbs 18:16 KJV A man's gift maketh room for him, and bringeth
him before great men.
When someone reaches into the FIVE-FOLD MINISTRY AND DEFEATS THE ENEMY,
Saul hates him.
These five smooth stones CAME FROM THE RIVER IN THE VALLEY.
FROM THE MOVING OF THE SPIRIT – SHAPED BY THE
SPIRIT’S MOVING.
Right in the midst of the SPIRIT MOVING.
Saul’s system lacking spiritual calling of Holy Ghost to separate
men for ministry (Acts 13) cannot defeat the works of the enemy.
It’s demonized!
Evil spirits can work in it.
Saul wound up being unable to talk to a prophet so
he turned to the occult and consulted a witch.
Saul could not destroy Goliath because of Goliath’s
characteristics.
1 Samuel 17:4 KJV And there went out a champion out of the camp
of the Philistines, named Goliath, of Gath, whose height was six cubits
and a span.
SIX CUBITS shows the NUMBER OF MAN.
6 – created on sixth day.
A SPAN is the width of the hand from the thumb to
the small finger.
So we see the picture of GOLIATH JUST BEYOND MAN BY
A HAND’S REACH.
Saul’s fleshly system CANNOT REACH that height
to bring him down.
Goliath is just beyond man.
But David did not use Saul’s armour, but rather PROPHESIED as he
ran to Goliath using Living water provided weapons of the SPIRIT
MINISTRY.
Only SPIRITUAL ministry can take down that which is
just out of reach of MAN’S FLESH.
GOLIATH (gol-yath') comes from the Hebrew w rod for
“EXILE”, which comes from GAW-LAW’ -- to
“to denude (especially in a disgraceful sense); by implication to
exile (captives being usually stripped).”
Colossians 2:15 KJV And having spoiled principalities and powers,
he made a shew of them openly, triumphing over them in it.
Jesus SPOILED the devil!
To divest wholly oneself
TO STRIP.
This GOLIATH was a STRIPPED ENEMY to David!
Goliath did not even hold his own shield.
1 Samuel 17:5-7 KJV And he had an helmet of brass upon his head,
and he was armed with a coat of mail; and the weight of the coat was
five thousand shekels of brass. (6) And he had greaves of
brass upon his legs, and a target of brass between his shoulders.
(7) And the staff of his spear was like a weaver's beam; and his
spear's head weighed six hundred shekels of iron: and one bearing a
shield went before him.
BRASS in the bible represents JUDGMENT.
The altar and laver were BRAZEN in the Temple and
tabernacle.
Hammered.
It speaks of JUDGMENT.
The helmet of brass is a fleshly JUDGMENTAL MINDSET.
CONDEMING AND JUDGMENTAL.
BRASS Coat of MAIL is a COAT LIKE SCALES.
Leviathian!
Crocodile of Egypt.
GREAVES of brass are LEG SUPPORTS.
Stand by fleshly judgment.
RV version renders TARGET to be a javelin like Saul threw at David.
1 Samuel 16:7 KJV But the LORD said unto Samuel, Look not on his
countenance, or on the height of his stature; because I have refused
him: for the LORD seeth not as man seeth; for man looketh on the
outward appearance, but the LORD looketh on the heart.
Look not to fleshly things our senses can pick up on.
God will even do things our five senses can pick up on, but the
SPIRITUAL things are nothing you can hear, taste, smell, touch or see.
THEY ARE UNSEEN.
2 Corinthians 4:18 KJV While we look not at the things which are
seen, but at the things which are not seen: for the things which are
seen are temporal; but the things which are not seen are eternal.
Look on the things of the heart.
Eternal things.
WALK AFTER THE SPIRIT.
It’s going to lead us for all eternity, so we
might as well get accustomed to being led by it now.
This flesh we have will be changed one day and made
immortal.
We will have all limitations of the mortal flesh
thrown off it.
And we will be Spirit-led so easily then.
But with sin in our flesh, in another sort of
transition period, before our flesh is changed, we need to learn to be
SPIRIT LED TODAY!
Drop what you fleshly five senses can relate to.
Tap into the FIVE-FOLD ministry instead.
