Ephesians 4:7-8 But unto every one of us is given grace according
to the measure of the gift of Christ. (8) Wherefore he
saith, When he ascended up on high, he led captivity captive, and gave
gifts unto men.
There’s a connection with taking captivity captive and giving gifts to men.
GIFTS TO DESTROY THE ENEMY
Luke 24:45-51 Then opened he their understanding, that they might
understand the scriptures, (46) And said unto them, Thus it
is written, and thus it behoved Christ to suffer, and to rise from the
dead the third day: (47) And that repentance and remission
of sins should be preached in his name among all nations, BEGINNING AT
JERUSALEM. (48) And ye are witnesses of these things.
(49) And, behold, I send the promise of my Father upon you: but
tarry ye in the city of Jerusalem, until ye be endued with POWER from
on high. (50) And he led them out as far as to Bethany, and
he lifted up his hands, and blessed them. (51) And it came
to pass, while he blessed them, he was parted from them, and carried up
into heaven.
These men had to meet in Jerusalem.
• Get Power.
• BEGIN to preach a message.
Nobody yet ACTUALLY PREACHED DETAILS about the death and resurrection
of Jesus before this point, after He actually died and resurrected.
• Jesus showed Himself periodically in the span of forty days that he was alive from the dead.
He ascended into Heaven.
• Mark’s gospel rewords that like this:
Mark 16:19 So then after the Lord had spoken unto them, he was received up into heaven, and sat on the right hand of God.
Sat on the right hand of God.
• He gave gifts to men after He ascended.
Mark connected his ascension to:
Psalms 110:1-2 A Psalm of David. The LORD said unto my Lord, Sit
thou at my right hand, until I make thine enemies thy footstool.
(2) The LORD shall send the rod of thy strength out of Zion: rule
thou in the midst of thine enemies.
There’s a connection with sitting at the right hand and enemies coming under His feet – AND ZION.
ZION was Jerusalem, as well as a HEAVENLY ZION.
• His strength would be sent out of ZION.
• HIS POWER.
They had to wait in Jerusalem.
Luke 24: (49) And, behold, I send the promise of my Father upon
you: but tarry ye in the city of Jerusalem, until ye be endued with
power from on high.
The promise was the power.
• THE FATHER would put Christ’s enemies under his feet.
• Notice the Spirit’s called the Promise of the Father
• His strength.
• Out of Zion.
Watch how Luke’s OTHER book refers to it.
Acts 1:4-8 And, being assembled together with them, commanded
them that they should not depart from Jerusalem, but wait for the
promise of the Father, which, saith he, ye have heard of me.
(5) For John truly baptized with water; but ye shall be baptized
with the Holy Ghost not many days hence. (6) When they
therefore were come together, they asked of him, saying, Lord, wilt
thou at this time restore again the kingdom to Israel? (7)
And he said unto them, It is not for you to know the times or the
seasons, which the Father hath put in his own power. (8)
But ye shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you:
and ye shall be witnesses unto me both in Jerusalem, and in all Judaea,
and in Samaria, and unto the uttermost part of the earth.
KINGDOM POWER IN JERUSALEM.
Jesus took the throne of God when He ascended.
Acts 2:2-4 And suddenly there came a sound from heaven as of a
rushing mighty wind, and it filled all the house where they were
sitting. (3) And there appeared unto them cloven tongues
like as of fire, and it sat upon each of them. (4) And they
were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and began to speak with other
tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance.
Acts 2:7-8 And they were all amazed and marvelled, saying one to
another, Behold, are not all these which speak Galilaeans?
(8) And how hear we every man in our own tongue, wherein we were
born?
Acts 2:13 Others mocking said, These men are full of new wine.
Acts 2:14-18 But Peter, standing up with the eleven, lifted up
his voice, and said unto them, Ye men of Judaea, and all ye that dwell
at Jerusalem, be this known unto you, and hearken to my words:
(15) For these are not drunken, as ye suppose, seeing it is but
the third hour of the day. (16) But this is that which was
spoken by the prophet Joel; (17) And it shall come to pass
in the last days, saith God, I will pour out of my Spirit upon all
flesh: and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, and your young
men shall see visions, and your old men shall dream dreams:
(18) And on my servants and on my handmaidens I will pour out in
those days of my Spirit; and they shall prophesy:
That was what Jesus told them to wait for before they preached repentance and remission of sins.
Acts 2:22-24 Ye men of Israel, hear these words; Jesus of
Nazareth, a man approved of God among you by miracles and wonders and
signs, which God did by him in the midst of you, as ye yourselves also
know: (23) Him, being delivered by the determinate counsel
and foreknowledge of God, ye have taken, and by wicked hands have
crucified and slain: (24) Whom God hath raised up, having
loosed the pains of death: because it was not possible that he should
be holden of it.
…all of that Spirit outpouring stems from Jesus, who was prophesied by David to be raised from the dead.
• HE QUOTES PSALM 16
Acts 2:25-28 For David speaketh concerning him, I foresaw the
Lord always before my face, for he is on my right hand, that I should
not be moved: (26) Therefore did my heart rejoice, and my
tongue was glad; moreover also my flesh shall rest in hope:
(27) Because thou wilt not leave my soul in hell, neither wilt
thou suffer thine Holy One to see corruption. (28) Thou
hast made known to me the ways of life; thou shalt make me full of joy
with thy countenance.
Acts 2:30-31 Therefore being a prophet, and knowing that God had
sworn with an oath to him, that of the fruit of his loins, according to
the flesh, he would raise up Christ to sit on his throne;
(31) He seeing this before spake of the resurrection of Christ,
that his soul was not left in hell, neither his flesh did see
corruption.
He was LOADED with death-conquering power.
• Notice verse 30.
• Peter in verse 30 mentioned Psalm 132:11.
Psalm 132:11 The LORD hath sworn in truth unto David; he will not
turn from it; Of the fruit of thy body will I set upon thy throne.
• Solomon quoted the same PSALM after he came to the throne and dedicated the temple.
2 Chronicles 5:1 Thus all the work that Solomon made for the
house of the LORD was finished: and Solomon brought in all the things
that David his father had dedicated; and the silver, and the gold, and
all the instruments, put he among the treasures of the house of God.
2 Chronicles 5:7 And the priests brought in the ark of the
covenant of the LORD unto his place, to the oracle of the house, into
the most holy place, even under the wings of the cherubims:
2 Chronicles 5:12-14 Also the Levites which were the singers, all
of them of Asaph, of Heman, of Jeduthun, with their sons and their
brethren, being arrayed in white linen, having cymbals and psalteries
and harps, stood at the east end of the altar, and with them an hundred
and twenty priests sounding with trumpets:) (13) It came
even to pass, as the trumpeters and singers were as one, to make one
sound to be heard in praising and thanking the LORD; and when they
lifted up their voice with the trumpets and cymbals and instruments of
musick, and praised the LORD, saying, For he is good; for his mercy
endureth for ever: that then the house was filled with a cloud, even
the house of the LORD; (14) So that the priests could not
stand to minister by reason of the cloud: for the glory of the LORD had
filled the house of God.
The glory filled the temple of Solomon after they brought in the ark and praised God in union.
• Notice 120 priests sounding trumpets IN UNISON!
The day Peter quotes David and the Psalms, we read…
Acts 1:15 And in those days Peter stood up in the midst of the
disciples, and said, (the number of names together were about an
hundred and twenty,)
Acts 2:1-2 And when the day of Pentecost was fully come, they
were all with one accord in one place. (2) And suddenly
there came a sound from heaven as of a rushing mighty wind, and it
filled all the house where they were sitting.
Acts 2:4 And they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and began
to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance.
• IN JERUSALEM, 120 trumpeters in one accord like 120 believers in one accord, Glory fills the house!
• But the 120 are filled as well!!!
And then Solomon said these words:
2 Chronicles 6:1-2 Then said Solomon, The LORD hath said that he
would dwell in the thick darkness. (2) But I have built an
house of habitation for thee, and a place for thy dwelling for ever.
2 Chronicles 6:3-4 And the king turned his face, and blessed the
whole congregation of Israel: and all the congregation of Israel
stood. (4) And he said, Blessed be the LORD God of Israel,
who hath with his hands fulfilled that which he spake with his mouth to
my father David, saying,
He BOLDLY PROCLAIMED:
2 Chronicles 6:5-6 Since the day that I brought forth my people
out of the land of Egypt I chose no city among all the tribes of Israel
to build an house in, that my name might be there; neither chose I any
man to be a ruler over my people Israel: (6) But I have
chosen Jerusalem, that my name might be there; and have chosen David to
be over my people Israel.
He said David wanted to build a house.
HIS NAME IS POWER.
2 Chronicles 6:9 Notwithstanding thou shalt not build the house;
but thy son which shall come forth out of thy loins, he shall build the
house for my name.
David struggled with wars.
• For him to build a house showed a bad picture of God.
• Struggling God.
• So SOLOMON his son would build it after enemies were conquered.
2 Samuel 7:11 And as since the time that I commanded judges to be
over my people Israel, and have caused thee to rest from all thine
enemies. Also the LORD telleth thee that he will make thee an house.
Solomon and JESUS ARE CALLED SON OF DAVID.
• SOLOMON means peaceful.
• JESUS is PRINCE OF PEACE.
• Prince is SON OF KING DAVID.
Matthew 16:18 And I say also unto thee, That thou art Peter, and
upon this rock I will build my church; and the gates of hell shall not
prevail against it.
2 Chronicles 6:10 The LORD therefore hath performed his word that
he hath spoken: for I am risen up in the room of David my father, and
am set on the throne of Israel, as the LORD promised, and have built
the house for the name of the LORD God of Israel. (11) And in it
have I put the ark, wherein is the covenant of the LORD, that he made
with the children of Israel.
2 Chronicles 6:16-17 Now therefore, O LORD God of Israel, keep
with thy servant David my father that which thou hast promised him,
saying, There shall not fail thee a man in my sight to sit upon the
throne of Israel; yet so that thy children take heed to their way to
walk in my law, as thou hast walked before me. (17) Now
then, O LORD God of Israel, let thy word be verified, which thou hast
spoken unto thy servant David.
2 Chronicles 6:41-42 Now therefore arise, O LORD God, into thy
resting place, thou, and the ark of thy strength: let thy priests, O
LORD God, be clothed with salvation, and let thy saints rejoice in
goodness. O LORD God, turn not away the face of thine anointed:
remember the mercies of David thy servant.
David wrote these words in Psalm 132.
Psalm 132:3-10 Surely I will not come into the tabernacle of my
house, nor go up into my bed; I will not give sleep to mine eyes, or
slumber to mine eyelids, Until I find out a place for the LORD, an
habitation for the mighty God of Jacob. Lo, we heard of it at
Ephratah: we found it in the fields of the wood. We’ll go
into his tabernacles: we’ll worship at his footstool.
Arise, O LORD, into thy rest; thou, and the ark of thy strength.
Let thy priests be clothed with righteousness; and let thy saints shout
for joy. For thy servant David’s sake turn not away the
face of thine anointed.
THE VERY NEXT VERSE says this:
Psalm 132:11 The LORD hath sworn in truth unto David; he will not
turn from it; Of the fruit of thy body will I set upon thy
throne.
Solomon quoted the exact Psalm 132 that Peter quoted in Acts 2 after the glory fell and filled 12 with the Spirit.
Acts 2:30 Therefore being a prophet, and knowing that God had
sworn with an oath to him, that of the fruit of his loins, according to
the flesh, he would raise up Christ to sit on his throne;
Acts 2:32-33 This Jesus hath God raised up, whereof we all are
witnesses. (33) Therefore being by the right hand of God
exalted, and having received of the Father the promise of the Holy
Ghost, he hath shed forth this, which ye now see and hear.
• Peter said the same Spirit that showed David
that Messiah would sit on his throne also showed David the Messiah
would not see corruption but be raised by God.
THE GREATER SON OF DAVID.
• Peter connected the outpouring of the Spirit
that Joel prophesied with the seating of Jesus at the right hand.
Here is where David prophesied that.
Psalms 110:1-2 A Psalm of David. The LORD said unto my Lord, Sit
thou at my right hand, until I make thine enemies thy footstool.
(2) The LORD shall send the rod of thy strength out of Zion: rule
thou in the midst of thine enemies.
Jesus told them to BEGIN preaching in Jerusalem, but wait for the promise of the Father.
• That Holy Spirit downpour was the promise of the Father.
• And Peter explained that was POURED OUT because JESUS WAS ON THE RIGHT HAND THRONE.
• And Psalm 110:2 said the Lord would SEND THE ROD OF HIS STRENGTH OUT OF ZION.
• That’s the GOSPEL!
• And Psalm 110 has it all in TWO VERSES!
The SPIRIT and WORD is the POWER.
• How did Peter know the Spirit in Joel 2 would be poured when Psalm 110:1 was fulfilled?
• How did Peter connect the two?
Acts 2:33-38 Therefore being by the right hand of God exalted,
and having received of the Father the promise of the Holy Ghost, he
hath shed forth this, which ye now see and hear. (34) For
David is not ascended into the heavens: but he saith himself, The LORD
said unto my Lord, Sit thou on my right hand, (35) Until I
make thy foes thy footstool. (36) Therefore let all the
house of Israel know assuredly, that God hath made that same Jesus,
whom ye have crucified, both Lord and Christ. (37) Now when
they heard this, they were pricked in their heart, and said unto Peter
and to the rest of the apostles, Men and brethren, what shall we
do? (38) Then Peter said unto them, Repent, and be baptized
every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins,
and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost.
RECEIVE THIS GIFT.
Why did he connect this GIFT of the Spirit with Jesus sitting at the right hand?
HERE’S HOW:
Ephesians 4:11 And he gave some, apostles; and some, prophets; and some, evangelists; and some, pastors and teachers;
And just before this we read:
Ephesians 4:7-8 But unto every one of us is given grace according
to the measure of the gift of Christ. (8) Wherefore he
saith, When he ascended up on high, he led captivity captive, and gave
gifts unto men.
• Mark 16 said He ascended to the RIGHT HAND.
Then Paul quoted :
Psalms 68:18 Thou hast ascended on high, thou hast led captivity
captive: thou hast received gifts for men; yea, for the rebellious
also, that the LORD God might dwell among them.
• THE HOLY GHOST IS A GIFT FOR EVERYONE!
• SOME are apostles and SOME are evangelists and prophets.
• BUT PETER SAID THE GIFT OF THE HOLY SPIRIT IS FOR EVERYONE!
These gifts are from the FATHER to CONQUER and bring the enemies of Jesus beneath His feet!
And after Peter preached that word…
Acts 2:41 Then they that gladly received his word were baptized:
and the same day there were added unto them about three thousand souls.
Look what happened after Solomon preached that same message.
VERIFY THY TRUTH!!!!
2 Chronicles 7:1 Now when Solomon had made an end of praying, the
fire came down from heaven, and consumed the burnt offering and the
sacrifices; and the glory of the LORD filled the house.
2 Chronicles 7:4-5 Then the king and all the people offered
sacrifices before the LORD. (5) And king Solomon offered a
sacrifice of twenty and two thousand oxen, and an hundred and twenty
thousand sheep: so the king and all the people dedicated the house of
God.
THE GLORY FELL A SECOND TIME AFTER SOLOMON SPOKE OF THE THRONE OF
DAVID, did the glory fall and fill the house just as in Acts 2 3,000
got saved and filled with the Spirit and baptized.
2 Chronicles 7:5 And king Solomon offered a sacrifice of twenty
and two thousand oxen, and an hundred and twenty thousand sheep: so the
king and all the people dedicated the house of God.
THESE GIFTS were from the FATHER who took captivity captive!
• He is making Jesus enemies His footstool!
• It was after Jesus died and resurrected from
the grave that he ascended having conquered death, hell and the grave.
• And the gifts he gave to mean was POWER over the devil!
• THE GIFT OF HEALING IS POWER OVER SATAN’S SICKNESS!
• THE WORD OF KNOWLEDGE IS POWER TO DESTROY WORKS OF SATAN.
• MIRACLES, FAITH , WISDOM, DIVERSE TONGUES, PROPHECY.
2 Chronicles 8 shows Solomon conquering all the nations around Israel.
2 Chronicles 8:2-6 That the cities which Huram had restored to
Solomon, Solomon built them, and caused the children of Israel to dwell
there. (3) And Solomon went to Hamathzobah, and prevailed
against it. (4) And he built Tadmor in the wilderness, and
all the store cities, which he built in Hamath. (5) Also he
built Bethhoron the upper, and Bethhoron the nether, fenced cities,
with walls, gates, and bars; (6) And Baalath, and all the
store cities that Solomon had, and all the chariot cities, and the
cities of the horsemen, and all that Solomon desired to build in
Jerusalem, and in Lebanon, and throughout all the land of his dominion.
Then the queen of Sheba came in 2 Chr. 9!
