THE GLORY THAT DROVE US OUT,
IS NOW DRIVEN BACK TO US!

Genesis 1:1-4  In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth.  (2)  And the earth was without form, and void; and darkness was upon the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God moved upon the face of the waters.  (3)  And God said, Let there be light: and there was light.  (4)  And God saw the light, that it was good: and God divided the light from the darkness.

This message is about the greatest experience you will ever know.
  • The very first notes of God's workings in the entire Bible actually foreshadow this greatest of all experiences.
  • God specifically chose this picture to highlight what He wanted us to seek above all else.
The Spirit of God is said to have "moved upon" the face of the waters or deep.
  • The Hebrew speaks of moving gently, or fluttering and brooding over the waters.
We can get the picture of a dove resting on a nest and hatching new chicks.

And resurrection occurred with the land rising up from beneath the waters.
  • The first half of the third day showed this "resurrection".
  • The second half showed the first earthly life, and noted trees with fruit coming forth.
John 3:5 informs us that the only way to enter the Kingdom of Heaven is through birth of water and Spirit.

Here we have water and Spirit, and God's spoken Word, in God's work of creating a kingdom for Adam.

Its the foreshadow of the experience of new birth and new creation by experiencing the baptism of the Holy Ghost!

This picture of God’s glory resting over something is repeated throughout the bible.
  • But this same glory that rested so gently here, acted quite violently against sin as well.
This happening involved the Glory of God.
  • God’s glory impregnated the waters.
  • A hen does so in order to hatch an egg.
  • Things mixed together were separated by God’s brooding, and life was generated.
And many ancient beliefs seem to actually stem from this biblical account.

The Chinese believe that the first man came out of chaos as though coming out of an egg.
  • The shell of which formed the heavens, the white the air, and the yolk the earth;
  • The Egyptians had a deity they called Cneph, out of whose mouth went forth an egg, which they interpreted of the world.
  • In the rites of Bacchus they worshipped an egg, as being an image of the world.
  • And this may be where the question comes from that asks, “Which came first, the chicken or the egg?”
  • Hermes says that there was an infinite darkness in the abyss or deep, and water, and a small intelligent spirit, endued with a divine power, were in the chaos.
However, the truth is as we have it in the Bible.

The same picture of a bird fluttering over her young is noted in the Exodus!

Deuteronomy 32:9-12  For the LORD'S portion is his people; Jacob is the lot of his inheritance.  (10)  He found him in a desert land, and in the waste howling wilderness; he led him about, he instructed him, he kept him as the apple of his eye.  (11)  As an eagle stirreth up her nest, fluttereth over her young, spreadeth abroad her wings, taketh them, beareth them on her wings:  (12)  So the LORD alone did lead him, and there was no strange god with him.

The Hebrew term for "waste", in verse 10, is actually "without form" in Genesis 1:2!
  • So we are reading of a similar picture of Genesis 1:2 when the world was without form and void.
And then we read of God, like an Eagle, fluttering over her young.
  • This is also the same Hebrew word as "moved upon" in Genesis 1:2.
  • And this is how the Lord describes taking Israel in the Exodus, and leading them.
That pillar of cloud and fire was the glory of God!

It was the same glory that brooded over the earth, as though birthing life in this world.

God’s glory is seen many times and occurs in many places throughout the biblical history.
  • When God’s VOICE came in the cool of the day after man sinned by eating the false fruit, Adam hid.
  • And the term VOICE actually means NOISE.
  • God’s glory was very gentle and merciful with that which it was concerned with.
  • But for the sinful and those who make enemies of themselves against Him, it was violent and dreadful.
  • This NOISE of God was of this glory coming against Adam in anger, causing him to hide.
Genesis 3:8  And they heard the voice of the LORD God walking in the garden in the cool of the day: and Adam and his wife hid themselves from the presence of the LORD God amongst the trees of the garden.

Now, notice that God’s glory acted like a hen brooding over its nest, and came in anger against Adam with NOISE.

Ezekiel 1:4  And I looked, and, behold, a whirlwind came out of the north, a great cloud, and a fire infolding itself, and a brightness was about it, and out of the midst thereof as the colour of amber, out of the midst of the fire.

We read about cherubims or loving creatures associated with this “glory”.
And then we read...

Ezekiel 1:13-14  As for the likeness of the living creatures, their appearance was like burning coals of fire, and like the appearance of lamps: it went up and down among the living creatures; and the fire was bright, and out of the fire went forth lightning.  (14)  And the living creatures ran and returned as the appearance of a flash of lightning.

Ezekiel 1:24  And when they went, I heard the noise of their wings, like the noise of great waters, as the voice of the Almighty, the voice of speech, as the noise of an host: when they stood, they let down their wings.

The synonymous rendering of VOICE and NOISE lend credence to our statement concerning the voice that terrified Adam in the Garden.

And the Hebrew terms for COOL OF THE DAY in Genesis 3:8 also can be rendered SPIRIT of CLOUD OF THE DAY.

We read in Ezekiel 1:4 that God’s glory came with a cloud as well.

Fire, cloud, lightning, and noise of great waters thundering like an army of people.

Ezekiel 1:28  As the appearance of the bow that is in the cloud in the day of rain, so was the appearance of the brightness round about. This was the appearance of the likeness of the glory of the LORD. And when I saw it, I fell upon my face, and I heard a voice of one that spake.

This gentle brooding presence of God that gently fluttered over the earth, giving thought to wings of cherubims surrounding his throne, came charging against Adam.

Genesis 3:24  So he drove out the man; and he placed at the east of the garden of Eden Cherubims, and a flaming sword which turned every way, to keep the way of the tree of life.

The word DROVE OUT actually means DIVORCED.

gaw-rash'
A primitive root; to drive out from a possession; especially to expatriate or divorce: - cast up (out), divorced (woman), drive away (forth, out), expel, X surely put away, trouble, thrust out.

Now, this is significant, because mankind is intended to contain the Spirit of God in our lives.
  • And the Bible considers this relationship with God as that of a man and woman joined together in marriage.
1 Corinthians 6:16-17  What? know ye not that he which is joined to an harlot is one body? for two, saith he, shall be one flesh.  (17)  But he that is joined unto the Lord is one spirit.

Ephesians 5:23  For the husband is the head of the wife, even as Christ is the head of the church: and he is the saviour of the body.

Romans 7:4  Wherefore, my brethren, ye also are become dead to the law by the body of Christ; that ye should be married to another, even to him who is raised from the dead, that we should bring forth fruit unto God.

As a woman receives seed from the man and is impregnated to bear children, we are “married” to Christ and bring forth fruit unto God.
  • His Spirit in our lives causes us to live forth a kind of life that is an image of God.
  • God reproduces Himself through our lives as Spirit-filled Christians who allow His Spirit to lead their lives.
And the idea of mankind receiving the fruit of life into himself, from the tree of life, is significant.
  • Genesis 1:11 distinctly notes that fruit contain seeds within, in order to bring forth after their kind.
Genesis 1:11  And God said, Let the earth bring forth grass, the herb yielding seed, and the fruit tree yielding fruit after his kind, whose seed is in itself, upon the earth: and it was so.

So the picture of God’s life is seen as impregnating mankind’s heart.

When the devil succeeded in having mankind take another fruit instead, it is no wonder we read that God’s Spirit DROVE OUT, or DIVORCED man.
  • God’s house was the garden.
  • And God divorced mankind from his home as a man sending out his wife.
  • Man heeded the devil’s words instead d of His words.
  • And this broke the first commandment of Moses that stated we must serve the Lord God alone.
  • Man listened to the devil before God.
And the cherubims we see in the east entrance depict that glory of God that Ezekiel saw.
  • John Gill said, “the words are not to be understood either of placing man, or placing the cherubim, but of Jehovah's placing himself, or taking up his habitation and residence before the garden of Eden, or at the east of it: while man abode in a state of innocence, the place of the divine Presence, or where God more gloriously manifested himself to him, was in the garden; but now he having sinned, and being driven out of it, he fixes his abode in a very awful manner at the entrance of the garden, to keep man out of it; for so the words may be rendered, "and he inhabited the cherubim, or dwelt over, or between the cherubim, before or at the east of the garden of Eden" (q); so the Jerusalem Targum,"and he made the glory of his Shechinah, or glorious Majesty, to dwell of old at the east of the garden of Eden, over or above the two cherubim;''”
God is said to dwell between the Cherubims.

1 Samuel 4:4  So the people sent to Shiloh, that they might bring from thence the ark of the covenant of the LORD of hosts, which dwelleth between the cherubims: and the two sons of Eli, Hophni and Phinehas, were there with the ark of the covenant of God.

The Jews wrote "he inhabited the cherubim and that with a flaming sword”

That flaming sword is the fire in the glory that Ezekiel saw.

Now, all of this is very important for us to understand.

We noted that the VOICE or NOISE from the wings of the Cherubims were like the voice of speech.

Ezekiel 1:24  And when they went, I heard the noise of their wings, like the noise of great waters, as the voice of the Almighty, the voice of speech, as the noise of an host: when they stood, they let down their wings.

The voice of the Almighty.

Revelation 1:15-16  And his feet like unto fine brass, as if they burned in a furnace; and his voice as the sound of many waters.  (16)  And he had in his right hand seven stars: and out of his mouth went a sharp twoedged sword: and his countenance was as the sun shineth in his strength.

Here we have the same VOICE and the SWORD as well.

This is Jesus Christ!

In fact, Ezekiel describes a throne over the fire and lightning with one seated on it who looks like Jesus as described in Revelation!
  • Gold in his upper body and brass and fire in his lower body.
  • See Ezekiel 1:27 and Rev 1:13, 15.
So we see Jesus Christ as God’s glory!
  • That is precisely what John’s Gospel said.
  • John’s Gospel starts out like Genesis.
John 1:1  In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.

John 1:4  In him was life; and the life was the light of men.

John 1:14  And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth.

Jesus is the GLORY!

As we look back at the thought of Christ being married to the Church as a Husband to a Wife, we realize some powerful truths.
  • Our marriage to Christ occurred when we were saved.
Ephesians 5:25-27  Husbands, love your wives, even as Christ also loved the church, and gave himself for it;  (26)  That he might sanctify and cleanse it with the washing of water by the word,  (27)  That he might present it to himself a glorious church, not having spot, or wrinkle, or any such thing; but that it should be holy and without blemish.

When a person is saved, belief and baptism is involved (Mark 16:16).
  • Peter told us to repent and be baptized in Jesus’ name for the remission of sins (Acts 2:38).
  • And Ephesians 5 mentions this baptism.
  • Washing of water is where baptism is indicated.
Acts 22:16  And now why tarriest thou? arise, and be baptized, and wash away thy sins, calling on the name of the Lord.

But the water alone is not the issue.
  • That is why Paul said that it is washing of water BY THE WORD.
  • Our faith in what the Bible says about what saves us, is what makes our baptism effective.
  • Romans 6:3 says that we are baptized into Jesus Christ’s death in order to be freed from our sins.
  • So we are not just dunked beneath water.
  • We are baptized in water with the genuine belief that we’re put into Jesus’ death on the cross in order to die so that our sins cannot attach to us any longer.
When we are baptized in Jesus’ name with the absolutely vital faith in our deaths with Jesus, we are sanctified and cleansed.
  • This allows us to be presented before God without spot or wrinkle or any such thing, because Jesus takes our sins away when we repent and are baptized!
  • Not a single element of our old lives remain.
  • We are born again!
  • We are made new creatures!
  • A new Genesis occurs!
Its as though the Spirit of God moves once again upon the face of the waters, and says LET THERE BE LIGHT!
  • God is light, and we are made children of light!
John 3:5  Jesus answered, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born of water and of the Spirit, he cannot enter into the kingdom of God.

All of this is in Genesis 1.
  • A kingdom is about to be created for Adam.
  • God’s Spirit moves.
  • Waters are present.
  • And we are born of the water and Spirit as God’s WORD speaks and engenders faith and light into our hearts!
Water and Spirit.

Paul came to Ephesus in Acts 19 and asked the believers there if they received the Spirit since they believed.
  • The first question regarded SPIRIT.
Acts 19:2  He said unto them, Have ye received the Holy Ghost since ye believed? And they said unto him, We have not so much as heard whether there be any Holy Ghost.

The second question regarded WATER.

Acts 19:3
And he said unto them, Unto what then were ye baptized? And they said, Unto John's baptism.

Paul also taught about the Exodus foreshadow of two elements of our new birth of water and Spirit.

1 Corinthians 10:1-2
Moreover, brethren, I would not that ye should be ignorant, how that all our fathers were under the cloud, and all passed through the sea;  (2)  And were all baptized unto Moses in the cloud and in the sea;

The cloud is the foreshadow of SPIRIT baptism, and Israel were UNDER the cloud, as the Spirit brooded over them!

And the baptism in the sea was the Red Sea crossing which is analogous to water baptism.

SPIRIT AND WATER!

It's everywhere!

Paul was thinking of the same idea when he wrote:

2 Corinthians 4:6  For God, who commanded the light to shine out of darkness, hath shined in our hearts, to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ.

Same pattern as Genesis 1:2-3.

And the Bible actually tells us that fire, lightning, and the noise or voice of God’s glory was involved in this new creation work of God in saving souls and making His church!

Acts 2:1-4  And when the day of Pentecost was fully come, they were all with one accord in one place.  (2)  And suddenly there came a sound from heaven as of a rushing mighty wind, and it filled all the house where they were sitting.  (3)  And there appeared unto them cloven tongues like as of fire, and it sat upon each of them.  (4)  And they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance.

Sound of rushing mighty wind.

RUSHING in the Greek language here means DRIVEN or DRIVING.

fer'-o
A primary verb (for which other and apparently not cognate ones are used in certain tenses only; to “bear” or carry (in a very wide application, literally and figuratively: - be, bear, bring (forth), carry, come, + let her drive, be driven, endure, go on, lay, lead, move, reach, rushing, uphold.

Recall that Adam was DRIVEN from the Garden.
  • In Adam’s case it was being divorced.
  • But God was DRIVEN to these people who loved Him in LOVE FOR THEM!
  • This Glory of God that drove and divorced man out of the Garden due to man’s sin is now said to have come back to these people in Acts 2 in order to birth them a second time.
  • God was MARRYING this GROUP.
  • When His Spirit came it was also as a RUSHING WIND.
  • This was the very sound of the glory that Ezekiel saw!
  • It was the NOISE that drove out Adam!
  • But He is coming to the church in love, here!
This glory filled the house.
  • This occurred beforehand in the tabernacle and temple.
Exodus 40:33-35  And he reared up the court round about the tabernacle and the altar, and set up the hanging of the court gate. So Moses finished the work.  (34)  Then a cloud covered the tent of the congregation, and the glory of the LORD filled the tabernacle.  (35)  And Moses was not able to enter into the tent of the congregation, because the cloud abode thereon, and the glory of the LORD filled the tabernacle.

2 Chronicles 5:12-14  Also the Levites which were the singers, all of them of Asaph, of Heman, of Jeduthun, with their sons and their brethren, being arrayed in white linen, having cymbals and psalteries and harps, stood at the east end of the altar, and with them an hundred and twenty priests sounding with trumpets:)  (13)  It came even to pass, as the trumpeters and singers were as one, to make one sound to be heard in praising and thanking the LORD; and when they lifted up their voice with the trumpets and cymbals and instruments of musick, and praised the LORD, saying, For he is good; for his mercy endureth for ever: that then the house was filled with a cloud, even the house of the LORD;  (14)  So that the priests could not stand to minister by reason of the cloud: for the glory of the LORD had filled the house of God.

120 people were also in the upper room in Acts 2 (Acts 1:15).

It’s a reversal of the tragedy in the Garden of Eden.

Act 2:3-4  And there appeared unto them cloven tongues like as of fire, and it sat upon each of them.  (4)  And they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance.

The tongues of fire is literally tongues of LIGHTNING in greek.
  • This was the same sight that Ezekiel saw as part of the glory of God!
  • Lightning.
  • Everywhere its screaming out to us of God's Glory!
Ezekiel 1:13  As for the likeness of the living creatures, their appearance was like burning coals of fire, and like the appearance of lamps: it went up and down among the living creatures; and the fire was bright, and out of the fire went forth lightning.

And a MIGHTY RUSHING WIND.

Ezekiel 1:4  And I looked, and, behold, a whirlwind came out of the north, a great cloud, and a fire infolding itself, and a brightness was about it, and out of the midst thereof as the colour of amber, out of the midst of the fire.

And the Spirit came UPON THEM.
  • It was like the brooding hen fluttering over the earth and hatching the egg to bring life forth.
Genesis 1:2  And the earth was without form, and void; and darkness was upon the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God moved upon the face of the waters.

Galatians 4:6  And because ye are sons, God hath sent forth the Spirit of his Son into your hearts, crying, Abba, Father.

ABBA is actually like a baby speaking "DADDA" in Hebrew, derived from the Syriac and Chaldee languages.
  • We receive His Spirit and are adopted as children of God!
John 3:5  Jesus answered, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born of water and of the Spirit, he cannot enter into the kingdom of God.

We are born of the Spirit.
  • Jesus said that the KINGDOM is entered upon by birth of water and Spirit.
  • All this was in Genesis.
  • A kingdom was being created for Adam.
  • The Spirit moved upon the Waters.
  • God's Word spoke forth!
God's Word speaks to you, and He wants you to be born again.
  • You are born of water and Spirit.
  • His glory comes upon you and into your life is a new creature created by Him!
  • As the glory cloud covered and filled the tabernacle, you are the temple of the Holy Ghost.
All through Genesis' creation, we read of God's Word speaking day after day.

Acts 2:4  And they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance.

We speak in tongues as the Spirit gives utterance.
  • Just as in creation.
  • God is speaking.
  • And we are speaking along with him!
  • New creation is at work!
And whereas the GLORY DROVE MAN OUT and AWAY, we read....

Act 2:6  Now when this was noised abroad, the multitude came together, and were confounded, because that every man heard them speak in his own language.

People are gathered together!
  • Different Tongues also drove away and divided mankind at the tower of Babel into various races and nations.
Genesis 11:7-9  Go to, let us go down, and there confound their language, that they may not understand one anther's speech.  (8)  So the LORD scattered them abroad from thence upon the face of all the earth: and they left off to build the city.  (9)  Therefore is the name of it called Babel; because the LORD did there confound the language of all the earth: and from thence did the LORD scatter them abroad upon the face of all the earth.

But here we read:

Act 2:6-11  Now when this was noised abroad, the multitude came together, and were confounded, because that every man heard them speak in his own language.  (7)  And they were all amazed and marvelled, saying one to another, Behold, are not all these which speak Galilaeans?  (8)  And how hear we every man in our own tongue, wherein we were born?  (9)  Parthians, and Medes, and Elamites, and the dwellers in Mesopotamia, and in Judaea, and Cappadocia, in Pontus, and Asia,  (10)  Phrygia, and Pamphylia, in Egypt, and in the parts of Libya about Cyrene, and strangers of Rome, Jews and proselytes,  (11)  Cretes and Arabians, we do hear them speak in our tongues the wonderful works of God.

God used languages to GATHER from ALL COUNTRIES!

Jesus is being ministered to our lives!

2 Corinthians 3:6  Who also hath made us able ministers of the new testament; not of the letter, but of the spirit: for the letter killeth, but the spirit giveth life.

Ministering LIFE to our lives!

John 1:4  In him was life; and the life was the light of men.

LET THERE BE LIGHT!

The Acts 2:4 Holy Ghost new birth experience is the new creation and new Genesis as paralleled in God's Spirit moving upon the dark old world, putting light into it!
