Leviticus 16:17  And there shall be no man in the tabernacle of the congregation when he goeth in to make an atonement in the holy place, until he come out, and have made an atonement for himself, and for his household, and for all the congregation of Israel.

Hebrews 9:7  But into the second went the high priest alone once every year, not without blood, which he offered for himself, and for the errors of the people:

Hebrews 4:14  Seeing then that we have a great high priest, that is passed into the heavens, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold fast our profession.

Nobody but one man on one day a year could enter the holiest place.

Jesus passed into HEAVEN instead of a physical holiest room on earth.

Hebrews 9:23-24  It was therefore necessary that the patterns of things in the heavens should be purified with these; but the heavenly things themselves with better sacrifices than these.  (24)  For Christ is not entered into the holy places made with hands, which are the figures of the true; but into heaven itself, now to appear in the presence of God for us:

And when we see HEAVEN, which Hebrews informs us is the TRUE holiest of holies, we find NO ONE ABLE TO GO IN EXCEPT ONE.

Revelation 4:1-2  After this I looked, and, behold, a door was opened in heaven: and the first voice which I heard was as it were of a trumpet talking with me; which said, Come up hither, and I will shew thee things which must be hereafter.  (2)  And immediately I was in the spirit: and, behold, a throne was set in heaven, and one sat on the throne.

Revelation 5:1-3  And I saw in the right hand of him that sat on the throne a book written within and on the backside, sealed with seven seals.  (2)  And I saw a strong angel proclaiming with a loud voice, Who is worthy to open the book, and to loose the seals thereof?  (3)  And no man in heaven, nor in earth, neither under the earth, was able to open the book, neither to look thereon.

Now this is pointing to worthiness to go to the throne to take the book.
•    What has that got to do with ATONEMENT by the high priest once a year?
•    Why is it about going to take a book and popping open the seals?
•    Hold on and keep reading.

Revelation 5:5  And one of the elders saith unto me, Weep not: behold, the Lion of the tribe of Juda, the Root of David, hath prevailed to open the book, and to loose the seven seals thereof.

Revelation 5:7-9  And he came and took the book out of the right hand of him that sat upon the throne.  (8)  And when he had taken the book, the four beasts and four and twenty elders fell down before the Lamb, having every one of them harps, and golden vials full of odours, which are the prayers of saints. (9)  And they sung a new song, saying, Thou art worthy to take the book, and to open the seals thereof: for thou wast slain, and hast redeemed us to God by thy blood out of every kindred, and tongue, and people, and nation;

There it is!
•    HIS BLOOD REDEEMED THEM TO GOD!
•    They did not say his death was  martyr’s death, or the death of a good moral teacher.
•    They said HIS DEATH redeemed them to God.
•    You only say that if you’re talking about a SACFRIFICE FOR SIN.

Now we know he was called high priest!
•    But here he is a lamb whose blood was shed and redeemed and paid for people for them to become the property of God.
•    So, why is a sacrificial lamb the symbol of Jesus if Jesus is the high priest who offers blood from an animal distinct from himself?
•    Here is why:

Hebrews 9:7  But into the second went the high priest alone once every year, not without blood, which he offered for himself, and for the errors of the people:

Hebrews 9:12  Neither by the blood of goats and calves, but by his own blood he entered in once into the holy place, having obtained eternal redemption for us.

So He is BOTH the sacrifice and the one offering the sacrifice.
•    He is the High priest and the sacrifice as well!

Now keep in mind that this is the whole focus of Heaven when John sees heaven opened in Revelation 4.

There is a common denominator between the HIGH PRIEST and the offering he offers.
•    BOTH STAND FOR THE PEOPLE who need sins remitted.

The high priest stands for us when he goes in before God.
•    He is MEDIATOR between God and man.
•    God hears him as though he was listening to us.
•    He comes to us and tells us what God told him, since God spoke to him for us to hear those words.

And the sacrificial animal stands for us.
•    When that animal was killed, it counted as though it was us being killed.
•    OUR SINS were put onto it.
•    So they’re removed from us, and those sins are paid for by a death penalty, and we’re considered to have paid that death penalty BY WAY OF THAT ANIMAL’S DEATH.

So Jesus goes in AS US as high priest, but ALSO AS US as the one slain for OUR sins!

But ONE VERSE in the middle of all of this shows us the reason WHY he represented US when he went to heaven and sacrifice and offerer of that sacrifice, BOTH.

Think of it.

We’re no good, filthy sinners.
•    Nothing we can do in and of ourselves can earn heaven.
•    So we need a high priest who offers a sacrifice on our behalf as though we’re no good for nothing other than DYING for our sins, and that death is in our place for our sins.
•    As high priest he is US.
•    And as sacrifice He is US.
•    And then we read when he went to that throne HE IS KING, and HE IS PRIEST.

Zechariah 6:13  Even he shall build the temple of the LORD; and he shall bear the glory, and shall sit and rule upon his throne; and he shall be a priest upon his throne: and the counsel of peace shall be between them both.

Did you know HE BECAME KING OF KINGS when he went to that throne in glory?

He BECAME HIGH PRIEST when he entered heaven, and would sit on that throne and be priest?

And the SAME Psalm 110 that spoke of him sitting at the right hand throne til his enemies are his footstool, we read….

Psalms 110:1-7  A Psalm of David. The LORD said unto my Lord, Sit thou at my right hand, until I make thine enemies thy footstool.  (2)  The LORD shall send the rod of thy strength out of Zion: rule thou in the midst of thine enemies.  (3)  Thy people shall be willing in the day of thy power, in the beauties of holiness from the womb of the morning: thou hast the dew of thy youth.  (4)  The LORD hath sworn, and will not repent, Thou art a priest for ever after the order of Melchizedek.  (5)  The Lord at thy right hand shall strike through kings in the day of his wrath.  (6)  He shall judge among the heathen, he shall fill the places with the dead bodies; he shall wound the heads over many countries.  (7)  He shall drink of the brook in the way: therefore shall he lift up the head.

KING AND PRIEST.

Now that you know all of this…. Watch:

Revelation 5:9-10  And they sung a new song, saying, Thou art worthy to take the book, and to open the seals thereof: for thou wast slain, and hast redeemed us to God by thy blood out of every kindred, and tongue, and people, and nation;  (10)  And hast made us unto our God kings and priests: and we shall reign on the earth.

WHEN HE BECAME KING AND HIGH PRIEST, HE MADE US KINGS AND PRIESTS!

After he identified with us in DYING for our sins m like they were his own, and standing before God as high priest on our behalf, HE BECOMES KING OF KINGS AND SITS TO RULE AND ACT AS PRIEST, AND is so identified with us THET WHEN HE IS KING AND PRIEST HE MAKES US KINGS AND PRIESTS!

This takes us back to …

Genesis 1:28  And God blessed them, and God said unto them, Be fruitful, and multiply, and replenish the earth, and subdue it: and have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over every living thing that moveth upon the earth.

It’s back to the KINGDOM OVER THE WORLD.
•    Adam made us sinners, and Jesus redeems and BUYS US BACK TO GOD, and once again WE ARE KINGS, but also PRIESTS AS WELL!

He came down  like us, to take our sins in union to us, all in order to raise us back up to GOD from the FALL, and restore us as KINGS AND PRIESTS like Adam had but lost way back in Genesis!
