  Scripture Text:

Mar 3:9-11 KJV  And he spake to his disciples, that a small ship should wait on him because of the multitude, lest they should throng him.  (10)  For he had healed many; insomuch that they pressed upon him for to touch him, as many as had plagues.  (11)  And unclean spirits, when they saw him, fell down before him, and cried, saying, Thou art the Son of God.

Mar 4:1-2 KJV  And he began again to teach by the sea side: and there was gathered unto him a great multitude, so that he entered into a ship, and sat in the sea; and the whole multitude was by the sea on the land.  (2)  And he taught them many things by parables, and said unto them in his doctrine,

Mar 4:35-36 KJV  And the same day, when the even was come, he saith unto them, Let us pass over unto the other side.  (36)  And when they had sent away the multitude, they took him even as he was in the ship. And there were also with him other little ships.

Mar 5:1-2 KJV  And they came over unto the other side of the sea, into the country of the Gadarenes.  (2)  And when he was come out of the ship, immediately there met him out of the tombs a man with an unclean spirit,

Luk 11:20 KJV  But if I with the finger of God cast out devils, no doubt the kingdom of God is come upon you.

  Message:

Jesus began to teach the people and used parables.
  • He did this while standing in a boat.
  • And the ship later was used to pass over the Sea of Galilee to Gadara, when the devil caused a storm to rise and scared the disciples.
  • Jesus slept in the boat and rebuked them all for their doubt, and commanded the wind to stop blowing the sea around.
  • Across the sea of Galilee two demoniacs were ministered to and delivered by Jesus.
  • Mark only mentions one, but Matt 8:28 says there were two of them.

All of this is a grand picture of who effective the Word of God is to people, and a warning as to how those who do not let His Word into their hearts will never PASS OVER into the power of the Kingdom of God.

When Jesus healed;led a man with a whithered arm in Mark 3, he was angry at the notions of the Jews there in the synagogue that sabbath day when they wondered if he would break sabbath by healing a man.
  • Sabbath was not broken by healing somebody!
  • But Jesus saw how their HEARTS WERE SO HARD.

Mar 3:5 KJV  And when he had looked round about on them with anger, being grieved for the hardness of their hearts, he saith unto the man, Stretch forth thine hand. And he stretched it out: and his hand was restored whole as the other.

The HEART is the whole point of this message tonight.
  • And we will find that all the scriptures in this part of Mark deal with the heart.

We read he then healed many people and cast out devils, and went to a mountain and chose 12 disciples and gave them power to minister.

Then he was accused of casting out devils by the prince of devils.
  • And he began to speak in parables.
  • These people blasphemed the Holy Ghost.
  • You can speak against the Son of man, he said, but to speak about what the Holy Ghost was doing as being the power of the devil is unforgivable.

Notice the words used here.

Mar 3:23 KJV  And he called them unto him, and said unto them in parables, How can Satan cast out Satan?

Before he spoke what most consider to be the first parable of the sower and the seed, he spoke parables to those who accused him of being possessed.

Parables are interesting things.

In Mark 4:1 we read he stood in the boat he told them to have waiting for him, and began to teach parables.
  • Boats are for journeys across the water.
  • And in teaching them the things of the Kingdom of God, Jesus was actually desirous of taking them over in a journey to a land called the KINGDOM OF GOD, spiritually speaking.
  • Some cannot make this journey.
  • Their minds cannot receive the Word of God.
  • The things God speaks to them they cannot comprehend.

Mar 4:10-12 KJV  And when he was alone, they that were about him with the twelve asked of him the parable.  (11)  And he said unto them, Unto you it is given to know the mystery of the kingdom of God: but unto them that are without, all these things are done in parables:  (12)  That seeing they may see, and not perceive; and hearing they may hear, and not understand; lest at any time they should be converted, and their sins should be forgiven them.

Now the first major parable was actually about PARABLES!
  • Jesus used parables because they veiled the message enough so that those who were "given to know" the mystery of the kingdom of God would know, and those who rejected Him would not know.
  • Parables were a wonderful way in which to only let those with hungry hearts "get" what God was saying, while they prohibited the others from figuring it out.
  • God refuses to cast his pearls before swine.

But this was a parable about parables!
  • The parable was about the sower who sowed seed into four types of soil.
  • Only one third of the types of soil was called GOOD, because it was not shallow, was not thorny and was not stony.
  • He used this parable to show how parables are not received into hearts that are hard in unbelief, and shallow because of inability to take persecution since they do not want their reputations ruined because of serving God, and thorny with more care for other things than the things of God.

Such people are never going to pass over into the Kingdom of God.

The Kingdom of God is basically "where it's at!" in regards to the will of God.
  • It's the entire world of the Holy Ghost.
  • It's where people who are real Christians as God intended us to be exist spiritually.
  • So many come to church and simply have no power and no victory and only attend church.
  • But the Kingdom of God is occupied by more than people of this sort.
  • It has people in it who know how to hear from God, and actually live with the Lord in His presence all their days.
  • They accomplish things for Him and Church is not a religion but a lifestyle.

The parables caused the disinterested and uncommitted people to simply not comprehend God's word, but it does something more for those hungry for God.

Mar 4:21-25 KJV  And he said unto them, Is a candle brought to be put under a bushel, or under a bed? and not to be set on a candlestick?  (22)  For there is nothing hid, which shall not be manifested; neither was any thing kept secret, but that it should come abroad.  (23)  If any man have ears to hear, let him hear.  (24)  And he said unto them, Take heed what ye hear: with what measure ye mete, it shall be measured to you: and unto you that hear shall more be given.  (25)  For he that hath, to him shall be given: and he that hath not, from him shall be taken even that which he hath.

He was trying to tell them that when God's word is given in parables, it is not given that way in order to hide it from everyone.
  • Yes, parables cause the unbelievers to get lost in hearing God's word, but to the believer parables have a very different effect.
  • Like light, God's word is not given in parables to HIDE it and make it overly mysterious to the point of not allowing anyone to understand it.
  • It is given in parables as though you put a light on a candlestick, to take the WORD and to MAGNIFY it's effectiveness like taking a candle and putting it on a candlestick.
  • A candlestick allows the candle to be more effective in shining light than the candlestick can do on it's own.
  • So while parables mess an unbeliever up, they actually ENHANCE the message of the Word of God to believers, because parables use everyday situations the people were very familiar with, and allows them to better understand what God is trying to say.

Parables are not intended to HIDE the truth from believers.
  • Verse 22 says nothing is hid that will not be manifested.
  • God wants to show and reveal all of His will to us!
  • But only the people with ears to hear will hear.
  • On the other hand....

4:11... all these things are done in parables:  (12)  That seeing they may see, and not perceive; and hearing they may hear, and not understand; lest at any time they should be converted, and their sins should be forgiven them.

Unbelievers will not get them.

 (24)  And he said unto them, Take heed what ye hear: with what measure ye mete, it shall be measured to you: and unto you that hear shall more be given.  (25)  For he that hath, to him shall be given: and he that hath not, from him shall be taken even that which he hath.

Notice this.
  • We need to be very careful about HOW WE HEAR.
  • How do you listen to the Word?
  • Ar e you hearing it in a state of HUNGER FOR WHATEVER HE HAS TO SAY?
  • Or is even this sermon just "another sermon", and you are not really interested in becoming more spiritual and growing more strong so you can do a work for God in this world, and not be bothered with always struggling to just keep yourself saved and unable to minister to anybody else?
  • HOW ARE YOU HEARING this tonight?
  • Have you cast aside every other thought form your mind, so you can focus in and get all that God has for you in this message?
  • Or is you r attention that limited that a baby's cough or a sound outside the window takes your attention away from the Word?
  • The way you are hearing this right now, Jesus said, determines what measure God shall give to you.
  • In the measure you mete, or the effort give forth to receive God's message, is the exact same effort God is going to use in AFFECTING YOUR LIFE.
  • To the ones who receive what God has to say, with all the effort He expects, those people will be given MORE and ADDITIONAL truths and wonders from His word.
  • But to the person who is not hearing with much effort, the truths they do know will be lost and taken away from them, like the birds of the air coming to take away the seed of the word that falls on hard ground.

I want to hear all I can from the Lord, and that is the reason my heart is fully focused on the word of God when it is preached in the church.

He gave a few more parables about the kingdom, and then took off in his boat and traveled over the sea of Galilee.

This represents those who truly receive God's word being people who take a journey.

Now, first base is to receive the word.
  • So many never get to first base!
  • They simply do not really want Gods word.
  • But to those who receive it, there is a second base to pass.
  • Once they were on the way in the boat across the sea, A STORM AROSE and tossed the ship all around.
  • THE DEVIL will not sit there and watch you advance into the Kingdom.
  • He knows that across the sea of Galilee are two men from Gadara that he possessed with his demons, and you are going to do something about if you get over there into the Kingdom!
  • SO HE TRIES TO SCARE YOU OFF!
  • ABANDON SHIP!

This is just like Israel's opportunity to enter into Canaan and set up the KINGDOM!
  • The devil scared them with giants and well walled cities.
  • The devil doesn't ;t mind you just LISTENING TO THE TRUTH and never putting your heart into it in order for you to journey and enter into the Kingdom and start defeating his armies.
  • The wilderness journey is like getting involved in church.
  • But the wilderness realm is where many like to stay, when it is only something you are supposed to pass through from which you are intended to then cross into Canaan where you drive out enemies and set up a temple for His name!
  • But many like to remain in the wilderness where they never face devils and church is only a ritual to them, and their lives remain carnal and they never work in the gifts of the Spirit or cast the devil out of lives.

"Stay where you are! DO not cross this sea!  See the storm that you get yourself into when you seek to advance into the Kingdom?  Go back and go home!"

So says the devil.

Mar 4:37-38 KJV  And there arose a great storm of wind, and the waves beat into the ship, so that it was now full.  (38)  And he was in the hinder part of the ship, asleep on a pillow: and they awake him, and say unto him, Master, carest thou not that we perish?

Sounds a lot like:

Num 14:3 KJV  And wherefore hath the LORD brought us unto this land, to fall by the sword, that our wives and our children should be a prey? were it not better for us to return into Egypt?

Num 13:33 KJV  And there we saw the giants, the sons of Anak, which come of the giants: and we were in our own sight as grasshoppers, and so we were in their sight.

Mar 4:38-40 KJV  And he was in the hinder part of the ship, asleep on a pillow: and they awake him, and say unto him, Master, carest thou not that we perish?  (39)  And he arose, and rebuked the wind, and said unto the sea, Peace, be still. And the wind ceased, and there was a great calm.  (40)  And he said unto them, Why are ye so fearful? how is it that ye have no faith?

Notice this:

Mar 4:41 KJV  And they feared exceedingly, and said one to another, What manner of man is this, that even the wind and the sea obey him?

They could not believe it when they saw Jesus calm the storm.
  • This tells us they never knew Jesus could handle such problems in their lives.
  • That is like the doubters in Exodus.
  • They feared entering Canaan because they did not know God could handle giants and well walled cities.

But they went on and came to the shore and saw the demon possessed man..

Mar 5:13 KJV  And forthwith Jesus gave them leave. And the unclean spirits went out, and entered into the swine: and the herd ran violently down a steep place into the sea, (they were about two thousand;) and were choked in the sea.

Jesus cast over 2000 demons out of the demoniac.

That tells us something about the kingdom.

Luk 11:20 KJV  But if I with the finger of God cast out devils, no doubt the kingdom of God is come upon you.

Those who RECEIVE God's word are not just getting serious about a religion.
  • They are becoming SPIRITUAL so they can enter the Kingdom lifestyle and pass over into a REAL Christianity.
  • There they cast out devils and destroy the works of the devil.
  • They actually make a difference in this world, one heart at a time.

Take heed how you hear.
  • If God could get some people as hungry to receive His word and affect them to enter into the Kingdom living as much as they are hungry to simply feel His Spirit in a song service and reach out for an emotional time of weeping and shaking their arms around, He would have a powerful church in this world.

This is what God's Word does to you when you seek to receive it with everything you can muster up.

Its' getting His word into your hearts.

Putting His word into your hearts CAUSES you to continue in the covenant.

Heb 8:7-10 KJV  For if that first covenant had been faultless, then should no place have been sought for the second.  (8)  For finding fault with them, he saith, Behold, the days come, saith the Lord, when I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel and with the house of Judah:  (9)  Not according to the covenant that I made with their fathers in the day when I took them by the hand to lead them out of the land of Egypt; because they continued not in my covenant, and I regarded them not, saith the Lord.  (10)  For this is the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel after those days, saith the Lord; I will put my laws into their mind, and write them in their hearts: and I will be to them a God, and they shall be to me a people:

If the first covenant had a fault that moved God to make a new one, because the people could not continue in the first, then the new one causes us to be able to continue in it.
  • And if the difference was in putting the law into the hearts of people, then that is what causes us to continue in the covenant.
  • How do you get it in?
  • God is doing His part.
  • He provided a means whereby you can get it in there and continue in his covenant.
  • But we must do our part BY TAKING HEED HOW WE HEAR.

Hunger for the word and get your mind off people and things that upset you.
  • TEAR DOWN STRONGHOLDS in your heart.

Heb 12:1 KJV  Wherefore seeing we also are compassed about with so great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which doth so easily beset us, and let us run with patience the race that is set before us,

THE SIN THAT DOTH SO EASILY BESET US.
  • Some people have a sin that gets them so easily every time.
  • A time is intended to come into your life when the sin that requires little effort for you to falter and mess up is laid aside by you in your life.
  • So you can run with patience the race that is set before you.

Gal 5:7 KJV  Ye did run well; who did hinder you that ye should not obey the truth?

Consider the deliverance of a man possessed by over 2,000 demons in light of Jesus' words about receiving the Seed of truth into the soil of your heart.
  • Though that man had over 2,000 demons, his heart wanted God's word.
  • How bad a state is a man's heart that is overcrowded with 2000 devils?
  • Yet Jesus set that man free, and when he wanted to leave with Jesus, after the people of Gadara demanded Jesus leave the region, Jesus told him to stay and tell everyone what happened to him.
  • When that man was finished giving his testimony, the people marvelled.
  • Look at how such a man, possessed by thousands of devils, allowed the seed of God's word to work in his heart to produce the kind of "Fruit" that would cause multitudes to marvel.
  • How much more can God do with us what He wants, although we have many problems, but we have a HEART THAT WANTS THE WORD?!
Mar 5:20 KJV  And he departed, and began to publish in Decapolis how great things Jesus had done for him: and all men did marvel.Jesus began to teach the people and used parables.

Mar 5:20 KJV  And he departed, and began to publish in Decapolis how great things Jesus had done for him: and all men did marvel.
