Matthew 16:13-20 KJV When Jesus came into the coasts of Caesarea Philippi, he asked his disciples, saying, Whom do men say that I the Son of man am? (14) And they said, Some say that thou art John the Baptist: some, Elias; and others, Jeremias, or one of the prophets. (15) He saith unto them, But whom say ye that I am? (16) And Simon Peter answered and said, Thou art the Christ, the Son of the living God. (17) And Jesus answered and said unto him, Blessed art thou, Simon Barjona: for flesh and blood hath not revealed it unto thee, but my Father which is in heaven. (18) And I say also unto thee, That thou art Peter, and upon this rock I will build my church; and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it. (19) And I will give unto thee the keys of the kingdom of heaven: and whatsoever thou shalt bind on earth shall be bound in heaven: and whatsoever thou shalt loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven. (20) Then charged he his disciples that they should tell no man that he was Jesus the Christ. Jesus explained there was a two-step progressive revelation for us.
When Jesus said HE ALSO HAS SOMETHING TO SAY TO PETER, He then said HE GIVES THE KEYS TO THE KINGDOM TO PETER. The SECOND REVELATION is what gives us the KEYS TO THE KINGDOM.
The Jews gave the key to the TEMPLE CLOSET where the sacred books were kept to the one who became a doctor of the Law.
Notice that this revelation involves building the church on the Rock in order for the Church to overpower the very gates of hell.
Stop there and keep in mind the idea of TWO REVELATIONS.
Notice that the CHURCH is built on the ROCK and DEATH itself cannot prevail.
1 Corinthians 3:11 KJV For other foundation can no man lay than that is laid, which is Jesus Christ. 1 Peter 2:3-7 If so be ye have tasted that the Lord is gracious. (4) To whom coming, as unto a living stone, disallowed indeed of men, but chosen of God, and precious, (5) Ye also, as lively stones, are built up a spiritual house, an holy priesthood, to offer up spiritual sacrifices, acceptable to God by Jesus Christ. (6) Wherefore also it is contained in the scripture, Behold, I lay in Sion a chief corner stone, elect, precious: and he that believeth on him shall not be confounded. (7) Unto you therefore which believe he is precious: but unto them which be disobedient, the stone which the builders disallowed, the same is made the head of the corner, Those built on this lively stone SHALL NOT BE CONFOUNDED.
JESUS IS THAT ROCK.
Matthew 16:21 From that time forth began Jesus to shew unto his disciples, how that he must go unto Jerusalem, and suffer many things of the elders and chief priests and scribes, and be killed, and be raised again the third day. Notice he speaks of the gates of DEATH, and then immediately BEGINS to speak of dying at Jerusalem and resurrecting. Since Jesus is the ROCK, and building His church on the Rock causes the Church to overpower DEATH, then it is no wonder He BEGAN to speak of His death and resurrection!
So, we see the subject of CHURCH ON THE ROCK, and the church more powerful than death as a result. THE SAME PICTURE IS FOUND IN MATT 7. Matthew 7:21-25 Not every one that saith unto me, Lord, Lord, shall enter into the kingdom of heaven; but he that doeth the will of my Father which is in heaven. (22) Many will say to me in that day, Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in thy name? and in thy name have cast out devils? and in thy name done many wonderful works? (23) And then will I profess unto them, I never knew you: depart from me, ye that work iniquity. (24) Therefore whosoever heareth these sayings of mine, and doeth them, I will liken him unto a wise man, which built his house upon a rock: (25) And the rain descended, and the floods came, and the winds blew, and beat upon that house; and it fell not: for it was founded upon a rock. There are several things in Matt 7 that correspond to Matt 16.
The HOUSE must be ON THE ROCK.
Notice what else Jesus and Peter discussed.
Matthew 16:22-26 Then Peter took him, and began to rebuke him, saying, Be it far from thee, Lord: this shall not be unto thee. (23) But he turned, and said unto Peter, Get thee behind me, Satan: thou art an offence unto me: for thou savourest not the things that be of God, but those that be of men. (24) Then said Jesus unto his disciples, If any man will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow me. (25) For whosoever will save his life shall lose it: and whosoever will lose his life for my sake shall find it. (26) For what is a man profited, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul? or what shall a man give in exchange for his soul? Peter did not want to hear anything about Jesus speaking of dying.
Jesus informs all of them that refusal to deny themselves and taking up their crosses discounts them from being HIS DISCIPLES.
Peter was right to think that HIS OWN NECK was on the line if Jesus’ neck was on the line.
When we’re united to Jesus like a HOUSE ON A ROCK, we have resurrection power on us!
But Peter shows us something.
This is important.
The way JESUS BUILDS HIS CHURCH ON THE ROCK is by teaching us and giving us REVELATION of how WE ARE UNITED TO HIM, so that we SHARE HIS KINGDOM POWER OVER DEATH ITSELF!
Psalms 110:1 A Psalm of David. The LORD said unto my Lord, Sit thou at my right hand, until I make thine enemies thy footstool. Paul refers to that Psalm and adds a comment about those enemies. 1 Corinthians 15:25-26 For he must reign, till he hath put all enemies under his feet. (26) The last enemy that shall be destroyed is death. Of all the enemies to be put under Jesus’ feet, the LAST ONE IS DEATH.
Ephesians 2:6 And hath raised us up together, and made us sit together in heavenly places in Christ Jesus: We are seated with Jesus AND HAVE POWER OVER THAT DEATH.
Back to Matthew 7. Matthew 7:21 Not every one that saith unto me, Lord, Lord, shall enter into the kingdom of heaven; but he that doeth the will of my Father which is in heaven. Notice that Jesus spoke of CALLING HIM “LORD”. 1 Corinthians 12:3 Wherefore I give you to understand, that no man speaking by the Spirit of God calleth Jesus accursed: and that no man can say that Jesus is the Lord, but by the Holy Ghost. You cannot call Jesus LORD but by the Holy Spirit.
There is really NOTHING TO DO when you get the revelation from the Father.
Matthew 7:24 Therefore whosoever heareth these sayings of mine, and doeth them, I will liken him unto a wise man, which built his house upon a rock: THE “DOING” part comes with the SECOND REVELATION FROM THE SON.
Notice that Jesus told the disciples that they must DO something in order to be His disciples, and that we must DO HIS SAYINGS to be the house on the rock that cannot fall.
Matthew 7:22-23 Many will say to me in that day, Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in thy name? and in thy name have cast out devils? and in thy name done many wonderful works? (23) And then will I profess unto them, I never knew you: depart from me, ye that work iniquity. THE SECOND REVELATION causes JESUS TO KNOW YOU! And notice He calls them “workers of iniquity”, sort of like calling Peter “satan”.
This also shows us that although we desperately need gifts of the Spirit in operation, those gifts are not the ultimate!
Galatians 5:24 And they that are Christ's have crucified the flesh with the affections and lusts. Let’s ENTER KINGDOM POWER – which is actually POWER OVER THE GREATEST FORCE THE ENEMY HAS – DEATH! |
