HOW WE RULE IN THIS LIFE

  Scripture Text:

2Ti 1:6-10    Wherefore I put thee in remembrance that thou stir up the gift of God, which is in thee by the putting on of my hands.  (7)  For God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind.  (8)  Be not thou therefore ashamed of the testimony of our Lord, nor of me his prisoner: but be thou partaker of the afflictions of the gospel according to the power of God;  (9)  Who hath saved us, and called us with an holy calling, not according to our works, but according to his own purpose and grace, which was given us in Christ Jesus before the world began,  (10)  But is now made manifest by the appearing of our Saviour Jesus Christ, who hath abolished death, and hath brought life and immortality to light through the gospel:

2Ti 1:12-18    For the which cause I also suffer these things: nevertheless I am not ashamed: for I know whom I have believed, and am persuaded that he is able to keep that which I have committed unto him against that day.  (13)  Hold fast the form of sound words, which thou hast heard of me, in faith and love which is in Christ Jesus.  (14)  That good thing which was committed unto thee keep by the Holy Ghost which dwelleth in us.  (15)  This thou knowest, that all they which are in Asia be turned away from me; of whom are Phygellus and Hermogenes.  (16)  The Lord give mercy unto the house of Onesiphorus; for he oft refreshed me, and was not ashamed of my chain:  (17)  But, when he was in Rome, he sought me out very diligently, and found me.  (18)  The Lord grant unto him that he may find mercy of the Lord in that day: and in how many things he ministered unto me at Ephesus, thou knowest very well.

2Ti 2:1-13    Thou therefore, my son, be strong in the grace that is in Christ Jesus.  (2)  And the things that thou hast heard of me among many witnesses, the same commit thou to faithful men, who shall be able to teach others also.  (3)  Thou therefore endure hardness, as a good soldier of Jesus Christ.  (4)  No man that warreth entangleth himself with the affairs of this life; that he may please him who hath chosen him to be a soldier.  (5)  And if a man also strive for masteries, yet is he not crowned, except he strive lawfully.  (6)  The husbandman that laboureth must be first partaker of the fruits.  (7)  Consider what I say; and the Lord give thee understanding in all things.  (8)  Remember that Jesus Christ of the seed of David was raised from the dead according to my gospel:  (9)  Wherein I suffer trouble, as an evil doer, even unto bonds; but the word of God is not bound.  (10)  Therefore I endure all things for the elect's sakes, that they may also obtain the salvation which is in Christ Jesus with eternal glory.  (11)  It is a faithful saying: For if we be dead with him, we shall also live with him:  (12)  If we suffer, we shall also reign with him: if we deny him, he also will deny us:  (13)  If we believe not, yet he abideth faithful: he cannot deny himself.

2Ti 3:12    Yea, and all that will live godly in Christ Jesus shall suffer persecution.

2Ti 3:14    But continue thou in the things which thou hast learned and hast been assured of, knowing of whom thou hast learned them;

2Ti 4:17-18    Notwithstanding the Lord stood with me, and strengthened me; that by me the preaching might be fully known, and that all the Gentiles might hear: and I was delivered out of the mouth of the lion.  (18)  And the Lord shall deliver me from every evil work, and will preserve me unto his heavenly kingdom: to whom be glory for ever and ever. Amen.

  Message:

I read all these words to give you the idea of what Paul was talking about when he said that if we suffer with him we will reign with him.
  • There is a twofold time of ruling with Jesus.
  • There is the kingdom here today in the Spirit.
  • Righteousness peace and joy in the Holy Ghost is what this kingdom is comprised of.
  • And We will show you that when these things occur DESPITE THE RESISTANCE OF THE DEVIL AND SIN, you are ruling in the kingdom  NOW.
  • But there is also the eternal kingdom that will continue forever after the church is resurrected and our bodies are changed into immortal ones.
  • And that is the one Paul referred to in 4:18.
  • The heavenly kingdom.

So we need to realize that just because we do not sit on physical thrones and wear physical crowns we nonetheless still kings and priests.
  • Jesus came to Israel AS HER KING, riding upon the colt, the foal of an ass.
  • Behold thy king cometh.
  • And the KINGDOM COMES WITH THE KING!

Some people think the Lord is not to sit on the throne until after the resurrection.
  • Not true.

Act 2:30-36    Therefore being a prophet, and knowing that God had sworn with an oath to him, that of the fruit of his loins, according to the flesh, he would raise up Christ to sit on his throne;  (31)  He seeing this before spake of the resurrection of Christ, that his soul was not left in hell, neither his flesh did see corruption.  (32)  This Jesus hath God raised up, whereof we all are witnesses.  (33)  Therefore being by the right hand of God exalted, and having received of the Father the promise of the Holy Ghost, he hath shed forth this, which ye now see and hear.  (34)  For David is not ascended into the heavens: but he saith himself, The LORD said unto my Lord, Sit thou on my right hand,  (35)  Until I make thy foes thy footstool.  (36)  Therefore let all the house of Israel know assuredly, that God hath made that same Jesus, whom ye have crucified, both Lord and Christ.

David foretold Jesus would rise to sit on David's throne.

And the only scriptures Peter used that he claimed that thought referred to was the following:

Act 2:25-28    For David speaketh concerning him, I foresaw the Lord always before my face, for he is on my right hand, that I should not be moved:  (26)  Therefore did my heart rejoice, and my tongue was glad; moreover also my flesh shall rest in hope:  (27)  Because thou wilt not leave my soul in hell, neither wilt thou suffer thine Holy One to see corruption.  (28)  Thou hast made known to me the ways of life; thou shalt make me full of joy with thy countenance.

Peter said THOSE WORDS refer to Jesus being raised up to sit on his throne.
  1. And since those words are all fulfilled, and Peter said they referred to the requirements for Jesus to sit on David's throne, then Jesus is on David's throne.
  2. And that is what we read anyway:

The resurrection of Christ was accomplished for Jesus to sit on David's throne.

Act 2:30-31    Therefore being a prophet, and knowing that God had sworn with an oath to him, that of the fruit of his loins, according to the flesh, he would raise up Christ to sit on his throne;  (31)  He seeing this before spake of the resurrection of Christ, that his soul was not left in hell, neither his flesh did see corruption.

Act 2:32-36    This Jesus hath God raised up, whereof we all are witnesses.

There are not two different thrones here.
  • Jesus is on David's throne, because He is a descendant of David, and even called the SON OF DAVID.
  • And because He sits on the right hand throne of God, and is Son of David, He is on David's throne.
  • David is not God, but Jesus is SON OF DAVID according to His flesh.
  • No matter where this SON OF DAVID sits, it is called David's throne because DAVID'S DYNASTY CONTINUES.

When Paul was speaking about suffering to rule with Christ, he compared Jesus' suffering with his persecutions.

He told Timothy to stir up the gift of God inside him, and then told us something very enlightening, which reveals Paul's intentions.

2Ti 1:6-10    Wherefore I put thee in remembrance that thou stir up the gift of God, which is in thee by the putting on of my hands.  (7)  For God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind.

Why would he mention the spirit of FEAR while telling him to stir up the gift of God in him?
  • Timothy had danger of refraining from ministry due to TROUBLE because of it.

He said the same thing earlier and gave a hint of the trouble.

1Ti 4:12-14    Let no man despise thy youth; but be thou an example of the believers, in word, in conversation, in charity, in spirit, in faith, in purity.  (13)  Till I come, give attendance to reading, to exhortation, to doctrine.  (14)  Neglect not the gift that is in thee, which was given thee by prophecy, with the laying on of the hands of the presbytery.

It seems to have been some trouble was coming from the church!
  • Timothy was TOO YOUNG in some people's minds.
  • Sinners are not going to worry about that, but it was believers!

Some People will be as jealous as Cain, but you must continue to minister and ENDURE THE TROUBLE.

2Ti 1:8    Be not thou therefore ashamed of the testimony of our Lord, nor of me his prisoner: but be thou partaker of the afflictions of the gospel according to the power of God;

Partake of the afflictions, and do so by the power of God!
  • This is where GRACE really shines a person's life.

Paul spoke of his own troubles.

2Ti 1:12    For the which cause I also suffer these things: nevertheless I am not ashamed: for I know whom I have believed, and am persuaded that he is able to keep that which I have committed unto him against that day.

2Ti 2:1    Thou therefore, my son, be strong in the grace that is in Christ Jesus.

2Ti 2:9-10    Wherein I suffer trouble, as an evil doer, even unto bonds; but the word of God is not bound.  (10)  Therefore I endure all things for the elect's sakes, that they may also obtain the salvation which is in Christ Jesus with eternal glory.

Paul said that the reason he suffers is for the elect's sake.
  • It's for those who are saved.
  • Somehow it causes them to obtain the salvation that is in Jesus.
  • And that is why Paul endured.

And this is what causes Paul to mention a faithful saying:

2Ti 2:11-13    It is a faithful saying: For if we be dead with him, we shall also live with him:  (12)  If we suffer, we shall also reign with him: if we deny him, he also will deny us:  (13)  If we believe not, yet he abideth faithful: he cannot deny himself.

He compared Jesus' suffering on the cross with his personal persecution he received from his ministry.
  • So if the suffering of Jesus was persecution in Paul, what was the LIVING that Jesus experienced in resurrecting from the dead that Paul shared?
  • Compare verse 12 with verse 10.

2Ti 2:12    If we suffer, we shall also reign with him: if we deny him, he also will deny us:

2Ti 2:10    Therefore I endure all things for the elect's sakes, that they may also obtain the salvation which is in Christ Jesus with eternal glory.

It is something about the SALVATION OF JESUS COMING INTO THE LIVES OF THE PEOPLE to whom he ministered.

When you suffer by persecution and resistance of the devil against your Christianity in working for him, and you ENDURE, knowing a key to this endurance, people are ministered to, and YOU ARE RULING WITH JESUS.
  • You are showing you have POWER IN YOU that is greater than the power of sin and satan meant to hold you back and cause you to quit.

2Ti 2:1    Thou therefore, my son, be strong in the grace that is in Christ Jesus.

Be strong in God's grace.
  • This is a kingdom of GRACE.
  • People who phenomenally endure are said to rule with Jesus in this kingdom, and they learned how to be strong in GOD'S GRACE.
  • People who quit are weak when it comes to the power of grace.
  • Grace is not able to work in their lives since they do not know how to let it work.

But grace requires an all important factor.
  • And if you learn this key, you will rule in the KINGDOM OF GRACE.

2Co 11:23-33    Are they ministers of Christ? (I speak as a fool) I am more; in labours more abundant, in stripes above measure, in prisons more frequent, in deaths oft.  (24)  Of the Jews five times received I forty stripes save one.  (25)  Thrice was I beaten with rods, once was I stoned, thrice I suffered shipwreck, a night and a day I have been in the deep;  (26)  In journeyings often, in perils of waters, in perils of robbers, in perils by mine own countrymen, in perils by the heathen, in perils in the city, in perils in the wilderness, in perils in the sea, in perils among false brethren;  (27)  In weariness and painfulness, in watchings often, in hunger and thirst, in fastings often, in cold and nakedness.  (28)  Beside those things that are without, that which cometh upon me daily, the care of all the churches.  (29)  Who is weak, and I am not weak? who is offended, and I burn not?  (30)  If I must needs glory, I will glory of the things which concern mine infirmities.  (31)  The God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, which is blessed for evermore, knoweth that I lie not.  (32)  In Damascus the governor under Aretas the king kept the city of the Damascenes with a garrison, desirous to apprehend me:  (33)  And through a window in a basket was I let down by the wall, and escaped his hands.

In this talk about afflictions, he speaks of his life years past when he was caught up into the third heaven.
  • That experience has to do with persecutions.

2Co 12:1-4    It is not expedient for me doubtless to glory. I will come to visions and revelations of the Lord.  (2)  I knew a man in Christ above fourteen years ago, (whether in the body, I cannot tell; or whether out of the body, I cannot tell: God knoweth;) such an one caught up to the third heaven.  (3)  And I knew such a man, (whether in the body, or out of the body, I cannot tell: God knoweth;)  (4)  How that he was caught up into paradise, and heard unspeakable words, which it is not lawful for a man to utter.

Scholars agree this was probably the reference:

Act 14:19-20    And there came thither certain Jews from Antioch and Iconium, who persuaded the people, and, having stoned Paul, drew him out of the city, supposing he had been dead.  (20)  Howbeit, as the disciples stood round about him, he rose up, and came into the city: and the next day he departed with Barnabas to Derbe.

2Co 12:7-10    And lest I should be exalted above measure through the abundance of the revelations, there was given to me a thorn in the flesh, the messenger of Satan to buffet me, lest I should be exalted above measure.  (8)  For this thing I besought the Lord thrice, that it might depart from me.  (9)  And he said unto me, My grace is sufficient for thee: for my strength is made perfect in weakness. Most gladly therefore will I rather glory in my infirmities, that the power of Christ may rest upon me.  (10)  Therefore I take pleasure in infirmities, in reproaches, in necessities, in persecutions, in distresses for Christ's sake: for when I am weak, then am I strong.

The devil is actually helping you come to experience the very thing you need to know in order to rule with Jesus NOW.

When you are troubled by any form of persecution, which can include attacks of even sickness by the devil, or fusses in your family, ENDURE THROUGH IT.
  • God told Paul that God's STRENGTH is made perfect in Paul's weakness.
  • In this way, as much as resurrection power came upon Jesus to sit on the throne of David as king of kings, after he suffered in death, GRACE gives you POWER.
  • Paul totally messed up the devil's kingdom by realizing that infirmities were means for God's grace to empower Him./
  • That is why he told Timothy to be strong in the grace of Jesus that was in him.
  • This shows that when sin and satan try to pressure us from continuing, and we endure, allowing grace to kick in and start given us power, GOD IS GREATER THAN THE DEVIL, and WE RULE.
  • Ruling is when a stronger force continues and overcomes when a weaker force fights and cannot win.

Gal 2:20-21    I am crucified with Christ: nevertheless I live; yet not I, but Christ liveth in me: and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by the faith of the Son of God, who loved me, and gave himself for me.  (21)  I do not frustrate the grace of God: for if righteousness come by the law, then Christ is dead in vain.

Though Paul spoke of his death with Christ so Jesus could live in Him -- suffering that leads to Jesus in Him coming forth -- in regards to LAW versus grace, we can apply that same thought to this issue.
  • Grace is frustrated when we are not dead with Christ so that he can live in us.
  • But when trouble comes and pressure to quit fights us, and we ENDURE, GRACE is not frustrated but is allowed to come forth and OVERCOMES the weak power of satan.

We could apply that same thought and say that "I do not frustrate the grace of God, for if I give in to every pressure and fight for me to quit, then Christ is dead in vain."

2Ti 2:10    Therefore I endure all things for the elect's sakes, that they may also obtain the salvation which is in Christ Jesus with eternal glory.

2Ti 2:12    If we suffer, we shall also reign with him: if we deny him, he also will deny us:

Mat 10:24-33    The disciple is not above his master, nor the servant above his lord.  (25)  It is enough for the disciple that he be as his master, and the servant as his lord. If they have called the master of the house Beelzebub, how much more shall they call them of his household?  (26)  Fear them not therefore: for there is nothing covered, that shall not be revealed; and hid, that shall not be known.  (27)  What I tell you in darkness, that speak ye in light: and what ye hear in the ear, that preach ye upon the housetops.  (28)  And fear not them which kill the body, but are not able to kill the soul: but rather fear him which is able to destroy both soul and body in hell.  (29)  Are not two sparrows sold for a farthing? and one of them shall not fall on the ground without your Father.  (30)  But the very hairs of your head are all numbered.  (31)  Fear ye not therefore, ye are of more value than many sparrows.  (32)  Whosoever therefore shall confess me before men, him will I confess also before my Father which is in heaven.  (33)  But whosoever shall deny me before men, him will I also deny before my Father which is in heaven.

Speaking about FEAR again, Jesus mentions the KINGDOM.
  • In every situation in life, troubles and pressures against our faith will come upon us.
  • We are pressured to QUIT.
  • And verse 32 speaks of confessing Jesus.
  • If we confess him before men, He will confess us before the Father.
  • But if we deny him, he will deny us.

The Father is obviously depending upon the Son's recommendation for who enters into eternal glory and the Kingdom of God.
  • And Jesus watches who stands up for him when the devil sends people and circumstances to get them to quit.
  • Those WHO ENDURE and KEEP ON CONFESSING JESUS will be recommended to the Father for the Kingdom forever.

God's grace actually does not work in us UNTIL PRESSURE COMES.

Paul said he did it so the elect might have salvation.

2Co 4:8-18    We are troubled on every side, yet not distressed; we are perplexed, but not in despair;  (9)  Persecuted, but not forsaken; cast down, but not destroyed;  (10)  Always bearing about in the body the dying of the Lord Jesus, that the life also of Jesus might be made manifest in our body.  (11)  For we which live are alway delivered unto death for Jesus' sake, that the life also of Jesus might be made manifest in our mortal flesh.  (12)  So then death worketh in us, but life in you.  (13)  We having the same spirit of faith, according as it is written, I believed, and therefore have I spoken; we also believe, and therefore speak;  (14)  Knowing that he which raised up the Lord Jesus shall raise up us also by Jesus, and shall present us with you.  (15)  For all things are for your sakes, that the abundant grace might through the thanksgiving of many redound to the glory of God.  (16)  For which cause we faint not; but though our outward man perish, yet the inward man is renewed day by day.  (17)  For our light affliction, which is but for a moment, worketh for us a far more exceeding and eternal weight of glory;  (18)  While we look not at the things which are seen, but at the things which are not seen: for the things which are seen are temporal; but the things which are not seen are eternal.

Paul said HE HAD DYING OF JESUS in his body.
  • And it caused him to preach and minister with more anointing and called it GRACE in verse 15.
  • The devil attacks in your mind -- trying to get you upset and too impatient to continue on.
  • But if you will TAKE IT, then something happens!
  • Grace kicks into action!
  • His POWER comes into play.
  • And YOU RULE RIGHT NOW in this life by experiencing an energy rising in you that causes you to minister and minister and be anointed to touch lives, and the devil can not stop it from happening.

Paul stopped praying for every thorn in his flesh to be stopped by God.
  • He began doing a very odd and weird thing when trouble came.
  • He gloried in it.
  • He knew that God's grace and power can only work in Him to empower Him when HE becomes weak in himself, through afflictions.

2 Cor 12: (10)  Therefore I take pleasure in infirmities, in reproaches, in necessities, in persecutions, in distresses for Christ's sake: for when I am weak, then am I strong.

God will keep Him for the KINGDOM:

2Ti 4:17-18    Notwithstanding the Lord stood with me, and strengthened me; that by me the preaching might be fully known, and that all the Gentiles might hear: and I was delivered out of the mouth of the lion.  (18)  And the Lord shall deliver me from every evil work, and will preserve me unto his heavenly kingdom: to whom be glory for ever and ever. Amen.

Paul knew that God would keep what he committed against that day.
  • What day?

2Ti 1:12    For the which cause I also suffer these things: nevertheless I am not ashamed: for I know whom I have believed, and am persuaded that he is able to keep that which I have committed unto him against that day.

2Ti 4:6-8    For I am now ready to be offered, and the time of my departure is at hand.  (7)  I have fought a good fight, I have finished my course, I have kept the faith:  (8)  Henceforth there is laid up for me a crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous judge, shall give me at that day: and not to me only, but unto all them also that love his appearing.

2Ti 4:9-12    Do thy diligence to come shortly unto me:  (10)  For Demas hath forsaken me, having loved this present world, and is departed unto Thessalonica; Crescens to Galatia, Titus unto Dalmatia.  (11)  Only Luke is with me. Take Mark, and bring him with thee: for he is profitable to me for the ministry.  (12)  And Tychicus have I sent to Ephesus.

He appealed to Timothy to hold on and endure, and not forsake Paul as Demas, Crescens and Titus did.

He appealed to Timothy that he and Luke would join Luke who alone ENDURED with Paul.

THE KINGDOM IS righteousness, peace and joy in the Holy Ghost.

Rom 14:17    For the kingdom of God is not meat and drink; but righteousness, and peace, and joy in the Holy Ghost.

And when we can keep having PEACE, JOY and RIGHTEOUSNESS, when all goes bad and resistance comes, WE RULE IN THIS KINGDOM!
